I forgot to take a picture of the vld, and the rounds compared to the magazine. I'll post them up later on.

Rifle is put together and the stock has been repainted. Can't wait to get it to the range.

Well with Christmas being so crazy, I didn't get the chance to do ANY shooting. But I did get to set down and reload some rounds. I got 3 rounds loaded from the minimum load with H4831sc, in .3 gr increments, all the way up to max load. I loaded them all .020" off the lands. One interesting thing I noticed while reloading, was the COAL with the ELD-X bullets. With the ELD-X bullets loaded to .020" off the lands, I had just enough magazine length to load these rounds with absolutely no loading issues (roughly 1/16" - 3/32" to spare). Well I happened to have a bunch of 168 gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets with me too, so I decided to compared them to the ELD-X. The design of the two appears to be very similar, but not exact (obviously). So for sh!ts and grins, I measured a VLD to see it's COAL in this new rifle. With the different ogive shape of the VLD, the COAL was quite a bit longer than the ELD-X when loaded to the lands. It was long enought that it would have issues with the magazine. In fact, it would not load in the magazine. So for anyone else looking to do a 7 saum in the future, the ELD-X will work in a Short Action Savage Magazine, but a VLD probably will not (unless you want to load them quite a bit off of the lands). To seat a VLD all the way out to the lands, you would have to work with a Long Action. Or you would have to single feed in the short action. Just thought I'd throw that info out there.
Thank you! Very timely & helpful.

Powell,
What is the internal length of the Savage SA mag box? Similar to a Rem 700 - around 2.825"?
Thanks!

Savage DBM and internal boxes are longer than rem. I think DMs were capable of like 2.9" in a SA. I have an accurate mag setup on mine with AICS and I didn't gain or lose length.

I've been out of town for the holidays, but I'll measure everything and post more pics. Probably later tonight.

I've been using reloder26 pushing the 180 ELD Match @ 3000fps with great results
Might want to try it out
I just ordered some 175 gr eldx bullets to give a try. I'm primarily going to use this for a deer rifle. I'm not sure the match bullets were meant for hunting were they?

Work great
5 animals with that rifle/bullet combo.
4 deer. 1 elk.
Deer were from 450 yards to 560 yards
Elk was at 555 yards
Of course this is a topic for another thread.
The 175 ELD X is a good bullet

I made it to the range and was able to shoot the 7 SAUM. Sorry for such a long time between updates. I loaded up 20 rounds, and shot them all over my chronograph at 100 yards (furthest I could shoot at the range I went to) this Saturday. I had one flyer, but over all a decent group for the wind that day. The rifle and round are capable of .375" groups (my best so far), but this day at the range was more for getting an average fps reading for building my dope card. After 20 rounds, I averaged 2956 fps, with an ES of 13 fps, and a SD of 6 fps. I couldn't be more please with the results. I ended up landing on 58.5 grains of H4831 SC, 162 ELDX bullets, and .020" off the lands. My max powder weight ended up being 59.5 grains of powder, at 3000 fps.

Maybe I missed it as this new format is a PIA for me.
Did you try RL26??
I get 3050fps with 180's.
My 7 saum is my new favorite
