7 PRC vs 300 Win Mag

This is just me, but I'd take the Big 7 each and every day over the 30, especially to 500 or less.

Keep in mind I like my rifles sub 9 lbs all scoped and ready to go as well I despise brakes so for me the 7 is the way to roll.
To each their own. I have a 6.5CM for under 400 yds. (Took 2 deer with it this year on its maiden hunt. One at 250 and the other at 300) This will be my 500+ yard rifle.

My bad, you said 500 plus, (been a long day chasing elk:)....for 500 plus I'd still be all over the Big 7.

To what range do you practice to on a consistent basis? I'm guessing you're working in the 500-1K range for quite a few rounds in a year eh?

Also, are we talking small big game like deer and antelope or big game like elk?

I'm leaning toward the prc because of the short neck of the WM which restricts the case capacity with heavier for caliber bullets.
Ignore that Short neck. I just bought a Bergara B-14 HMR in 300 win mag; it has a long throat, and I can seat bullets out to 3.600 and easily chamber them. With these new slow-burning magnum powders,3,000 FPS is obtainable with 210 gr bullets. My rifle is a tac driver.

Man I wish I was chasing elk with you. Ive hunted several western states and had quite a bit of success taking game out to over 400 yds with my Rem 700 in 270 Win but I'm just getting into this LR game. I started with a 6.5CM a couple years ago and it's been a learning experience. A lot of the guys here helped me out answering many questions, even the dumb ones!
I figured as long as I'm going for extended range I might as well go for a bigger caliber and 300WM seemed like a better choice and recommended over the 7PRC by a few here.
As for practicing, the range I belong to only has a 300 yd range which is chicken feed even for my 6.5CM.
This spring I plan on looking for a range with more distance or even ask some local farms if I can utilize their fields. I have a few steel plates I can set up.

I have two of them in different cartridges, both are lights out accurate, but I did have to put good triggers in them. I am sold on TriggerTech Diamond, excellent trigger. I believe you'll enjoy the rifle.

I'm wondering how the 7prc is considered a "big 7" 🤔
I would argue that title is more reserved for the 2 heavyweights in the 7 category...

You know, the big 7s....

Totally understand, to me the 7 PRC is a magnum, guess I call any of the mag's Big 7's...my bad

Personally I shoot a 7 Mashburn Super and to me that's a Big 7 as well....go figure eh

Yes the HMR is a dandy rifle. I have another one in 6.5CM and the reason I decided on another. I need it like I need another hole in the head. This is the 4th rifle I've purchased in 3 months! I got a Savage Axis in 308 Win that is in the load development process and a CVA Scout in .44 mag that is going to be my camp/truck rifle. I also picked up a T/C Seneca .45 cal muzzleloader at an online auction which I should be receiving any day now.
So for now my list of CF rifles consists of: .223, 7-08, 350 legend, 308 win, 30-06, 300 WM, 30-30 (x2), 375 Win, 44 mag. plus a bunch of muzzleloaders both sidelocks and inlines and smokeless.
I just came back for the local GS and got a box of 180 gr Federal Fusion ammo to sight in the rifle and for the brass, a can of Hornady One Shot and a canister of H1000

I just got back from Europtics and I pulled the trigger and my apologies to the 7PRC followers but I settled on the 300 Win Mag and also on the HMR in lieu of the Sierra Wilderness!
My reasoning was that I got the HMR for only $50 more and it would have cost me $125-$150 to convert the Sierra to use AICS mags. Also the HMR sports a 2" longer barrel and is 2 lb heavier. This rifle's primary purpose is long range target shooting with an occasional use as a hunting rifle where long shots is a possibility.
I also purchased a 20 MOA rail a set of Athlon rings and a Athlon Midas 6-24x50 MOA scope.
The prices were excellent especially the scope, only $400!
Now to find some brass!

This gun is heavy, so the 300 WM caliber will be easy to shoot with a good break. I would look at a 4 or 5 port Self timer from Salmon River Solutions, Area 419 or American precision arms (Fat Bastard). Get the US optics folding bubble level from Eurooptic or Amazon. I like these on a Pic Rail as they are simple and quite accurate for long range shooting.

There are many 190 to 230 grain Berger, Hornady and Sierra bullets that will shoot will in a 300 Win for Target shooting. It seems like that 205 to 215 grain range is the sweet spot for the 300 WM with many shooters. For Hunting, I like 175 to 195 Copper Monolithic bullets in the 300WM, but these bigger lead core target/hunting bullets most shooters use will work well for most long range hunting too and they cost less also.

The Atlas Cal or an Accu-tac are both great and strong bipods for prone and bench shooting. If you want higher models, MDT 2 or 3 legs pull are good but expensive. The new Gunwerks is pretty good I have heard. Their is a newer bipod from a guy out of AZ, costing around 450 which is good for sitting/hunting shooting too.

I find that quality accessories, precision optics and good loads more important than the caliber or the rifle make, more times than not. Good shooting.

Haha I meant no disrespect dogz. The mashburn is in a league above the PRC I'd think. Probly right up there on the lower end of the big 7s. Sweet round!

OP glad you made your decision! I know the winnie makes me smile every time I pull it out and I am a 7 man at heart!
