7-300 Long Range Improved

For strictly a hunting round, that 195 @ 2818, even with a dirty powder, is what I would be running. That is no joke from an 18" barrel!
I only get 2840 from a 184 Hyb from a 7SS with a 24"!
With ADG brass I hit pressure in the upper 2700s with N570 and 195s so the dirty crud falling out of my suppressor wasn't worth it.
Even at 2850 the eldx will get me to 900 yards at my elevation, for a cross over elk killing timber rifle I won't be shooting beyond 800

I settled on 2900 fps with the 175 ELDX and took it to 850 yards last night, using the Hornady app drop was spot on.
I just got some 180 VLD targets,
I'll post load data and verified drop when I get a chance.
I'd probably just stick with the eldx if I had more of them, I want to see what other bullets will do so I can buy a bunch of whichever one I can find first.

Ok here's some data with the 180 vld target.
They definitely pressure up quicker than the ELDX, I settled on 2800 fps with 66 grains of RL26.
I started with. 045 jump and shot two groups at 200 yards, both were right at 1.75"
I increased the freebore to .070 and shot a stupid good group that measured .7"
Looks like the VLDs definitely like more jump which surprised me.
I plan on shooting the load at 1k after work to validate drop.

I've been shooting this setup for awhile now and here's a few updates.
I settled on the 180 VLDH and am getting great accuracy and pretty much zero vertical at 2800 fps.
I shot an antelope with it last month at a whopping 275 yards, it's an awesome super light/quiet hunting setup.

I did some improvements to my 986 yard range and did a little shooting this afternoon.
Winds were 10 mph, I narrowly missed my plate with a bad wind call, corrected and hammered it twice, then sent my last two shots at a clean rock that I'd just placed to get a group.
Wish I'd had a 3rd round cuz these two were 1.5 " apart !
I'm loving this wildcat,
suck it 7 PRC 🤓

Great job!!

Love complete custom builds like this. They give such satisfaction as we were discussing in the 300NM std thread.

I never tried it and just always thought going past 40° craared a cycling issue with mags. This shows otherwise.

The perf in this wsm imp cases is incredible in short barrels. Not to mention the jump in pressure these can dimensions can handle allow even more efficiency.

570 is slow enough you are not quite getting a complete burn so I bet that suppresor acts like a trash collector lol.

I like what you did with the barrel flare. Much like they do with thinner AR barrels that need 5/8 threads. That's going to be a nice light rifle to pack while hunting.

If I have to hike elevation my limit is 10lb ready to hunt and lighter is better.

The Vx HD are great value $ for hunting and extremely lightweight. What model did you mount of this?

Again congrats on this build and it working so well!

Thanks I'm very happy with the performance and tunability.
I sold the vx5 and have been running a Trijicon Tenmile 3-18, it's a rock solid scope that's tracking spot on.

Ha. That's the same scope I am considering.

My 338 Mega is 21.5" 6.5lb Fierce CF hunter stock sako 85 action.

I wanted the 4-24x50 but SFP was a deal breaker. The 3-18x44 is enough for me to hunt out to 1k just not ideal for scanning. The 4-30x56 is 3/4lb heavier. I would be fine with the extra $400 but none at decent price are in stock and that's a hunk of weight to add for this rifle.

Did you get the mrad or moa?

I have not been willing to trust Leupold in the last 15-20yrs. My mk and vx4 from the 90s are great but something happened to them after that. It's like they forgot how to run QC and design on internal mechanics of a scope. I see the vx3hd being stated as a great value and it likely is I just can not bring myself to trust them.

So you are really satisfied with the tenmile?

I am planning to pull the trigger on the 3-18x44 this weekend.

Yeah I really think it's a tough scope to beat under $1500.
I don't know about the 44mm version I have the 50mm mil sfp model.
For a 3-18x scope I'm fine with sfp, here's a killer deal at Eurooptic.
