You should not give up. You can still go hunting just use some of them there bullets that have no KE and you won't have to worry about the pack out

It depends upon several factors……your conditioning, how rugged the country, how far to carry out, ect.

My wife and I have carried out numerous elk, though most under a mile from the truck. A good pack frame, the elk cut into "bite-size" pieces……several trips and you got'r done.

Same for moose…..just a few more trips! memtb

If a 6CM is what you have and what you shoot best go for it. Pick the right bullet and use good judgement in shot selection. You shoot an Elk through the lungs with the right bullet out of a 6CM it will die. Packing out can be a chore, but it is also part of the fun. Just like @memtb said take it quarter by quarter, multiple trips. Even if it takes 2 days. Get the animal quarters in a game bags and hang the bags from a tree so they stay cool.

Thanks. You make it sound easy. Four years ago i was driving out to N D While in Wyoming i drove past a trail head. Lots of trucks and horse trailers Elk season had opened. In the aspens close to the trail head i saw a really beautiful 6 point bull elk walking through the aspens no hunters around. They were all up in the higher elevations. You just never know where they might be

108 ELDM. I've got several kills with that bullet, from 2800ish to 1900ish fps impact velocity. Put that in the chest of an elk and he'll die.

Some of the frangible bullets offer rather impressive kills with shots through the lungs!


The "fly in the ointment" with this philosophy is…..the bullet must get to the lungs! Thus enters that nasty thing called "REALITY"!


If you have faith that the stars will align perfectly for you, the elk standing broadside, and the bullet "surgically" placed by you…..this is no place for a fragile/frangible bullet.

You want a bullet that is designed for hunting…..a bullet designed reliably expand within it's operating velocity range, that "WILL NOT" fragment, retaining near 100% of it's original weight. Meaning, this bullet will penetrate deeply through bone and dense muscle, getting to and damaging the vitals ….if it had less than perfect placement.

My choice would be the Barnes 80 grain TTSX. memtb

None! There is sufficient data indicating that it's performance on game can be erratic. Apparently, when the ELDM works it's great.

I prefer "not" to experiment on an elk sized game animal with a "match" bullet of small caliber! If a perfectly placed shot is guaranteed……then maybe. But, in my world of reality……perfectly placed shots are not guaranteed. Your mileage may vary.

Strangely this looks like an example of different bullet designs giving different results of that thing that everyone is saying don't exist, or is irrelevant, Oh yeah it's kinetic energy transferred to the target.

I've seen several deer shot with that bullet… only seen one exit. Admittedly, all deer went down pretty hard.

Heck, I've had the 108 ELDM not exit on broadside coyote shots. Again, coyotes went down like they were struck by lightning.

I much prefer the 103 ELDX out of the 6 Creed on big game animals. Haven't had a deer make it further than 20 yards after impact, and can only recall two that didn't exit.

What a pitiful ******* site. We've seen this on so many culling trips, where some ******* fudd brought his ultra-magnum whatever he couldn't shoot well with a bullet that marketing convinced him was the best.
