6mm Creed in Long Action

I have an Origin Long Action I originally planned to use for a rifle, but recently got the idea to try and use it for a SA build (temporarily for a few years). The thought is to build a kids/family rifle for deer/fun (low recoil). 6mm creedmoor is on my mind.

Could I build it out using the Accurate Mag 308 Long Action Mag?
Anybody have experience with a similar SA built on a LA?
Anyone have experience with the Accurate Mag 308 LA mag?

Assuming you can get it to feed reliably the only disadvantage is the extra weight (which is an advantage if it's not a hunting rifle or being used in a weight limited competition). Feeding issues are pretty common with SA cartridges in LA receivers, but can generally be resolved with some magazine tuning.

Depending on your goals 243 or 243 ai might be worth a look. The advantage of Creedmoor cartridges is the ability to run long, high BC bullets in a short action. With a long action and an appropriate barrel twist you could do the same with 243. You'd gain a little extra case capacity which you could take advantage of with hand loads, but it'll be even more of a barrel burner than 6 Creed.

Great option, and I have considered that! Ruger American or Savage 110, cut/threaded, and could dress it up if you wanted to.

You can load it longer than SAAMI spec to run long bullets no problem. If/when you switch to a short action you'd probably want to switch to 6 Creed so you can still run long bullets, which might leave you with some unused dies and a pile of brass.

None of that matters if you're shooting factory ammo, in which case Creed is the way to go.

I hand load, and would likely shoot a mixture of factory and hand loaded ammo.

Running a short action cartridge in a long action won't hurt a thing. You'll be able to load longer than saami spec and touch the rifling if you want. Folks have been building them for years.
6creed is the easy button it's already optimized in saami spec, factory ammo is plentiful.
Since you're a hand loader sky is the limit.
Standard 243win with 1/10 twist will sling 100gr hunting bullets with plenty of punch. I've bounced between 95gr Hornady SST and 100gr interlocks in my Ruger for nearly 20yrs. Neither have never let me down, that little rifle has killed truck loads of deer for me, buddy's kids, in-experienced shooters over the years. We've dropped them at powder burn distance and at 300+yds.
243ai will get you a touch more case capacity. With the ai burning h4350 you should see 3000fps with 100gr bullets even with a 20" barrel.

get a 6rem/244rem and use slower powders to have a longer life as it would work in a long action better. plus, its max pressure is less than the creed.

using 110a-tip 3.065" @ 20" barrel it's still supersonic at 1,500 yards using vv165 which is a cool temp powder. drop is near 946" (78' 8") @ 1,500 yards.

Talked to Accurate Mag today and they were pretty confident I wouldn't have any issues running a 6 creed in a LA using their 308 LA mag. Said at most you may have to tweak the feed lips, but should be able to get it to feed just fine. I think I'd stick with the 6 creed over 243/243ai.

Good choice to go with 6 creed. I think it's an improved 243 and I have 4 rifles in it! Soooo easy to reload. You need a 7.5 or 8 twist to stabilize the over 100gr. Bullets. And I think your build will be better with at least a 22 " barrel. Nit much additional weight. Yes, a 243 with a 10 twist works; but I found the 6 creeds work better with the 7.5 or 8 twist as that will allow the heavier bullets, from 103 to 115. It truly is a great cartridge and will drop deer way out there!

I've had a couple of short action cartridges built on long actions over the years, and it's a great way to get all there is out of the smaller case. The ability to seat your bullets long gives you a bit more room for powder, and if you don't run into pressure problems it's a great thing, but always be safe.
