6.5x284 load with H1000?

I just finished a 6.5x284 build, still tinkering with it but it seems to really like 54.5 grs. of H1000 running right at 2930 fps. Tried 55 and 55.5 but chonograghed at the same speed, I figured the bullet must be leaving the barrel before all the powder is burned.

Thats about what I get in a 24 barrel with Retumbo and H 1000 but 3 grn higher with Win LRM Primers . 2930 and 2970 after that With retumbo, starts looking like a black powder rifle and smokes after the bullet leaves and big spread.

I just did one with H-1000 and 140 Bergers. Started on the lands at 50 gr and worked up to 55 gr where I saw pressure. Ended up at 52 gr. This was in Lapua brass and with Fed GM 210M primers.

Hey Jeff, what are your thoughts on the VLD compared to the 143 ELDX or 147 ELDM? I've got a new barrel coming and have the ELDX and VLD's, but was trying to decide which one to load. I know you took a nice Montana pronghorn with the ELDM and your 6.5 PRC, so was curious your take on which would be the better hunting bullet and which you prefer. Everything I've seen and heard has the VLD performing flawlessly.

As far a powders go, like Greyfox said, 56-58 gr of Retumbo works great, so does 52-55 of RL26 and 51-52 or 53-54 gr of H4831(sc) in the 6.5-284. All 3 of these powders were winners in my rifle before I torched the barrel

I did a little work with the 143 ELD-x. Using Retumbo in my 24' barrel(6.5x284), accuracy, velocity and ES were very close between the two. I have been hesitant to try the ELD-x on game yet given some mixed reviews, and, my rather long exoerience with the 140 Berger's and JLK's which have both performed well on game for me from 200-1000+ yards. As a side note, it appears Berger may be shipping the 140HVLD's. I just received a back-order of 500CT from Midway.

Some 200 yard info. POI very close between the two bullets:

I've used the 200 gr ELDX in my 300 WSM with great results. The 5x5 New Mexico bull elk I shot with that bullet last year dropped in his tracks. It looked like he got hit by a bolt of lightning!! I've had another friend from this site use the 178 gr ELDX in his 308 to take a huge Indiana whitetail. Same results....bang, flop

I have 5 6.5-284 3 of them like 55 gr h1000 and 2 like 51 gr of h4831 all with Berger 140 vld at 2900 to 2950 FPS depending on which rifle

Apologies if I implied that "all" ELD-X bullets were questioned. I actually use the 200gr ELD-x in my 300WM. I was speaking more specifically to the 6.5, 143gr. which have had mixed reviews...

No apologies necessary Greyfox. I didn't know people were having performance issues with the 6.5mm 143 gr ELDX. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I should load develop the VLD's

Greyfox do you think its possible to the the 150smk going over 3,000fps in a 24" tube with an 8 twist? I was going to try to do it with some N570. Mines a 6.5prc but i know its close to your 6.5x284

I think it's s stretch in a 24"
barrel. Maybe with R-26 if you have a fast barrel.

I loaded 142lrab with 55.8gr rl26 and fed 210 match primers....best results were [email protected] a 55 degree day....lite bolt,no marks....
Next time i went to shoot same 60+ degrees slight bolt and marks on brass...
Dropped back to 55gr @ 2975....1"@100yd...happy for now.....
Mine is a 24.5" shilen barrel....

I would Like to know if anyone has tried rl26 in a 26 nosler....please....
