6.5 Sherman Shortmag Load Data

Ran some RL33 & 140 hybrids to FIREFORM some Norma brass this past weekend. I loaded from 64-67 grains, 210 WLR, .145 necks. 67gr was quite compressed & topped out at 3212' while still being a mild load. I run a chrono most times while working up loads for added data. I know the case capacity will increase by about 2-3 grains for the formed cases, but what the heck right. The velocity wasn't up to where I thought it should, or end up with a formed case, but the accuracy was there with groups in the .3's & in the .2's.

I'm really curious about the IMR Enduron powder too, specifically the 7977 powder. Been reading good things about this powder.

I have some VERY limited data on the 7977. I shot one 4 shot group with it when testing the new RL 23 and 26 powders. I was so impressed with the RL26 that I continued on with it. Single digit ES and great velocity. 7977 needs a lot more testing, but my first impression was that it would likely not be a top velocity powder but accuracy looked pretty good in the one group that I tried. I have no hard info on this, but I would not be at all surprised if it was IMR's version of H1000 with some copper reducer in it. Hodgdon DOES own IMR.........Rich

Yep, never top velocity, but decent accuracy...

If one was to chase after pure accuracy, it would seem RL26 is they key? With that single digit ES?
Or would H4831sc be they key?
130-140 gr bullets.
Are you all running large rifle primers? Or have you been going with Magnum primers?

I would try both as every rifle is different and RL26 is still very new. As you stated though; that is a mighty appealing ES for long range work. We still need to see how sensitive to temp it is. I am using F210 and some BR2 primers.......Rich

I tried some 7977 today in my 30/375 S.I. If it isn't H1000, it sure acts the same. I loaded 78 grains behind a 215 Berger and clocked exactly 3000' This is a moderate load and shows the approx. same velocity and pressure as H1000. Hope this helps!.......Rich

I got to try out my H1000 loads today. I started at 63.4 and went up to 66.0 gr with a 130 gr VLD. Well, I tried to anyway. I had 10 of 63.4 and 10 of 63.8 since these were my hopefuls and the 5 of the other increases in powder. I shot a few foulers with 63.4 and the did a 6 shot group and it was just over 1 moa. (Shooting at 200 yards) I was getting pressure signs with ejector marks! I jumped up to 63.8 to see what would happen and it shot at 1.5 moa with ejector marks and stiff bolt lift on some. I stopped here. I had shot 20 rounds all with some sort of pressure sign. Wasn't too thrilled at this. Then I fired a few of the 63.8 gr over the Chrony and got 3446 fps. That explained the pressure signs! Now I got a few bullets to pull and work my way down with powder charges. I expect to find a nice node at 3250 fps which should be a mild load. This is a 25" barrel with a gain twist of 1:16-1:8

I just orderd a few boxes of the Nosler Accubond Longrange 264 in 142 grain weight:D
I am interested to see how they will preform accuracy wise and what speed I can get from them in the 6.5ss. I also want to see if the BC stated is true.
Keep you posted.

For all you 6.5 SS shooters, I am now recommending that the neck wall thickness be turned to .014", or even .013" to provide more clearance. You may have to bush down a little, but my es went way down with a little more clearance. I would go for no more than .002" fit on the bullet........Rich

Thanks Rich. I'm gonna try turning my necks down to .014. I'm at .015 now using the .291 bushing. I went out shooting Sunday with my loads for the 130 gr VLD and H1000 powder. (Excited for the 130 gr hybrid coming soon!)
My ES spread wasn't so good. But still shot some decent groups considering. What surprised me was how big the node was. It started at 60.5 gr and went up to 62.5. Even 63 gr was still good. My chronograph showed 62.5 gr was pushing the 130 gr bullet at 3320 fps. No pressure signs. I hit pressure signs at 63.8 gr. my goal is a mild load with accuracy as my main goal. I did manage a .29moa group (3 shot only) with 62.5 gr load. All the other charges from 60.5 to 63 gr were .7-.5 moa. My ES was not that great though. I'm gonna thin out my necks as suggested by Rich and try some more. I was also running sonically cleaned brass which will give more 'grabby' necks. I'm gonna try brushing the inside of the necks with a very light lube. I think I'll use Eezox. Getting close!
