I watched a friend of mine take a big aoudad out of palo duro canyon with the eldms. No elk but still a stout animal. He was quartering to us hard, the bullet punched through 3/4 of the body length and exited the front of his hind quarter.
Don't expect that kind of penetration as the norm for those though... Just sayin. I've had enough personal experience to know. They do best at long range impacts...

If you kill animals or hunt long enough you will find out the hard way why you shouldn't use target bullets for your bullet of choice . Experience is the best teacher.Bottom line choose a bullet designed too kill animals , not targets.

I guess I should also note in my personal rifles I'm running hammer hunters, absolute hammers, and partitions, depending on application. With the exception of a 308, it gets the old 168 a max.

I'm curious. Does this logic apply to all bullets or just target bullets? If a bullet fails does that mean it shouldn't be used going forward?

I guess the situation . If a bullet is designed for a certain task and it flat out fails , no other variables involved , that bullet might be reconsidered . On the other hand if you use a bullet that is not designed for a certain task and it fails too perform above it's expectations you can't blame the bullet. You can blame yourself.

Wonder if the logic applies to Viagra. It was developed as a cardiovascular medication. They discovered it had some other benefits and changed the label. Presumably if berger or another "target" bullet put a hunting label on the box......everything is just ducky.

I have no opinion on the OP's bullet conundrum. Not a fan of the 6.5 cal.

Let's take a vote round 2! Elk hunting with the 6.5 prc out to 500 yards max
Options are 124 hammer hunter at 3400fps or the 156 Berger at 2900fps groups are the pretty much the same. Or 143 eldx factory loads at 3000fps
Thanks!
None of them is a magic bullet. Pick one that shoots best out of your rifle at your intended range. I prefer the ELD-M over ELD-X. I do not have a 6.5 PRC but I have a .264 WM and "my" preferred bullet from your list is the 156 Berger. Good luck!

What else is there too say each too there own . I'm a big big fan of the 6.5 cal . That dosnt mean I would or wouldn't take that round on a Elk Hunt . The question is bullet of choice.

I will never take another elk with the 6.5. Strictly my opinion, but I would use a 30-06 180 gr or bigger. With that said, if I only had a 6.5 (and mine is a SAUM) I think I would go with the monolithic. My second choice would be the 143 ELDX (which I've used on mane antelope and mule deer in my 6.5).

I've had solid results with good old 140 grain Sierra Game Kings and 143 grain Hornady ELD-X bullets in a Weatherby 6.5 RPM running 3035 and 3045 FPS respectively.

I killed a bull at 710 yards with a 143 eldx and it worked amazingly well at that distance (6.5prc 2960 MV). The bullet penetrated the diagonal length of the chest cavity and came to rest under the offside hide retaining 78% of its weight. That being said they fragment violently at close range but that is the nature of the beast. If the bullet is soft enough to expand reliably at distance it will have a tendency to over expand at high impact velocities.

Here's my question for you hammer fans, In the 6.5 weather it is a creed or a PRC why don't you ever hear of anyone using a 140gr. Hammer. I would think it would be a awesome bullet choice in the PRC!

That's the reason my 6.5 Prc has a switch lug . Choices6.5prc or 300 wsm. either one works for me.
