Hahaha - I never assumed you hated 6.5's or the range you were shooting. You are assuming my comments were directed at you when they weren't. This is directed at you tho - your 88gr low BC hammer bullets must be as magic as the 6.5 creedmoor for you to think the 88gr 6mm bullet is ok at any range. You are just spewing bs to sell your **** - you are all over the place. This coming from the guy who said there is no replacement for displacement? At least be consistent in the stand you are taking. I am saying it was a laughable for you to brag about an 88gr 6mm bullet elk hunting when you are questioning the capability of the 140 gr 6.5 bullet. Even you saying you would take a 130gr 7mm08 over a 140gr 6.5 creedmore - saying BC is over rated only because your bullets bc's are weak, even worse than what you claim on your website. The more you post the more credibility you loose. There you go assuming things again. Last time you assumed that I hate 6.5's and that I had probably never shoot one. Now you are assumingthe range that I intend to shoot. That's ok though because I assume you never get tired of being wrong.
I would rather shoot an elk with my 6mm creed running a muzzle vel of 3350 fps with an 88g Hammer Hunter (a rugged bullet that can handle the needed penetration) at 350y than with a 6.5 Creed running a 140g anything with a muzzle vel of 2700 fps.
Can i ask what scope you were using on the 6.5 holy grail please as im in the process of converting to 6.5 creedmoreI know I am going to get a bunch of flack for posting this, but....
In a recent conversation with a friend of mine, who has a grand slam of sheep on his bedroom wall, and a super slam of the rest of the game animals in North America less a barren ground caribou, I was told during a conversation about accurate smaller caliber rounds that he has four friends, who this year each lost mature elk bulls each with a 140 grain bullet reasonable well placed from a 6.5 Creedmor.
This cartridge, to me, seems to have the ability in many of its proponents minds to be the holy grail of all cartridge designs. It is sad when common sense is put back in the gun locker when any of us take to the woods with a weapon that doesn't really fill the bill for the game we hunt, when we know we have the horsepower in the locker to do the job properly.
Elmer Keith who we all know loved the .270 Winchester. But his favorite for hunting and guiding for elk is reported to be the .375 H&H. He also loved the .338 Win Mag.
Dead is Dead, but wounded is usually also dead but with a heavy dose of suffering to go with it.
I own a .338 Win Mag and have made it a point to be able to shoot it comfortably. I also own 2 25-06's and 3 .243's. I use the latter to plink, for my grandchildren to shoot deer, and for just a fun day on the range. When the hunt is on for me and as a back up it is 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Exact or .338 Win Mag. Common sense to see that Dead is Dead when I pull the trigger on something worth shooting.
Maybe, mayne not. They could just be pointing out the obvious that I've been saying all along. It is ballistically a .300 WinMag.Is Hornady having some extra fun out of you naysayers. They put a picture of a 300 Win Mag next to the 300 PRC specs.
The OP wasn't shooting the 6.5, this was a buddy of a buddy story- but I am sure there are a lot of guys shooting creedmoors that will give you some advice if you state the intended purpose. I have a 260 rem with a vortex pst that is fun for target shooting. I have a VX5HD on a 25-06 i hunt with. Both good scopes. Can i ask what scope you were using on the 6.5 holy grail please as im in the process of converting to 6.5 creedmore
I think you make some good points. I don't know if I entirely agree with the flinching. Some people really don't do well with recoil and flinch - probably more than will actually admit it. I have seen people that flinch shooting a 300 win mag shoot a 243 or 25-06 with zero flinch.Been following along here and things seem to being repeated over and over. Just about any center fire rifle will kill an elk even likely a 22lr will. Does this make every rifle cartridge an elk cartridge NO. If the 6.5CM is your best suited cartridge to shoot an elk use i. If you have a larger more powerful rifle to use for pete sake use it. Just because a cartridge can and has killed elk does not make it a best choice.
Kind of on this train of thought some have said large cartridges make them flinch. Truth is if you flinch with one gun you likely have a problem a smaller cartridge will stop while you are hunting. If you flinch you flinch no matter what. It may have been brought on by a large cartridge but just hunting with a small one will not solve it. That process will take time and practice.
From what I have learned over the years we all have different elk cartridges we turn to. Now to some that is the 6.5CM and to others as has been stated it is a 243. To me neither would be my choice I would go 300 mag or 338 mag. Am I right no are they right no these are just our choices.
I am enjoying this thread and it is a real hot topic too bad it will likely never be resolved.
He used this guys Bergara whom he had just met. The guy that owned the rifle was helping his buddy hunt for elk, and was letting him also use his Bergara, that guy killed a 6x6 bull first at 930 yards. My buddy joined them and watched that guy take his bull. About 4 minutes latter he seen his bull walk out from behind a tree and the guy that owned the Bergara let him use it to take his bull. What kind of 6.5?

I don't even shoot a creedmoor, I have no personal connection to it. So lets clarify - your weak bc super magic hammer bullet in a 7mm08 are better than any 140gr 6.5 bullet. Your propaganda is worse than hornady's regarding the 6.5 creed. You are both full of bs. Keep shooting those 88gr magic bullets at elk bro - because there is no replacement for displacement. Holy hell...this guy is great. You quoted me.
You got your undies in a bundle because the 6.5 creed was called out for what it is.
Yes a 131g bullet from a 7-08 at 3100fps will do a better job than a 140g bullet from a Creed at 2700 fps. It may have a tougher time punching paper at 1000. Not at reasonable ranges for the cartridge on elk.
You are wrong again.
You are correct in your thoughts. They lost those bulls because they believed the media hype about the 6.5CM. They watched the idiots on YouTube and on the hunting shows that through the magic of editing, seem to never miss, and never make a bad shot. They heard all the bullsh!t stories about how it has mystical powers and, and how the military is adopting it, and how it's "just as good as the .300 WinMag" (that's not a joke, I've actually heard someone say that) .
Hope they learned their lessons, and don't fall for the same BS hype with the 6.5 PRC and .300 PRC.
And he might want to get new hunting buddies too!Quoted for posterity and food for thought.
