6.5 Creedmoor AI. What will this start?

I say there's not enough return on your investment regarding fire forming and dies to do the build.

Just build something that will comfortably hit that speed such as a 6.5x284 or 65 PRC. Even a 260AI would be a better option, much better in fact.

Hi, just wondering if anyone has looked into a 6.5 Creedmoor AI? I'm a fan of the 6.5's I built my son a 6.5 Creedmoor Bat Machine action Obermeyer barrel Jewel trigger McMillan stock shoots awesome with factory ammo it's definitely under .50 mos @ 200 yards . But would a 6.5 Creedmoor AI get to 3000 FPS or better does anyone have any info? If this is doable this might be an easy one to fire form. I think??

The Creeds are already an improved design with a 30
Shoulder and taking them to 40 will not achieve much. If u r wanting 3,000 from a 140 go with a 260AI chamber. Mine reach that vel fairly easily.

Why? The Creedmoor already is practically an "improved" case, it has very little body taper and a 35degree shoulder, dont think you'd get a ton of extra capacity by blowing that forward to 40degrees. If you want to improve a short action 6.5mm case, go with a 260AI, that will get you pretty darn close to your target velocities running the right powders.

Or like others have said, just step up to the 6.5-284 (if you want to keep your 308 bolt face) or the SAUM/GAP 4S if you want better fit in your action.

+1 on the 6.5 SAUM. Can get there in short action and 24in barrel and not eat brass or barrel.

6.5-06 6.5x284, 6.5 SAUM, WSM. 26 Nosler. Any of them would all be better than Trying to force the Creed to push a 140gr 3000fps.
Such speeds requires high pressures, compressed loads. ECT. If you have your mind set on a certain bullet traveling at a certain speed, pick a case capable of doing it with ease. It's safer and your barrel life will be better.

While the 6.5-284 can be setup in a short action, a long action is usually preferred for extended seating of the bullet (more powder capacity). The 6.5SAUM is designed for a short action. Only throating and twist rate limit bullet weight in the SAUM. This could be what Tex_Hunter was referring too. If I missed his point, I apologize.

I am not sure that the cost of dies, reamer would be worth the Creed AI. Look before you leap, you are talking a chunk of money.

The 6.5 Creedmoor may well be my 2nd favorite cartridge on earth. ( 1st is the 458 Win)

But, I have to agree with going with a bigger case if you need 3k /140 gr.

The Creed was designed to be a mild mannered , accurate cartridge.
It excells at that. Its not very hard on throats or barrels or brass when it is kept within its design parameters.
The 6.5 Short RUM , 264 Win mag or a 6.5 Sherman would be what I would try if I needed more velocity.

Another possibility is the 6.5 PRC. Hornady factory load is near 3k and certainly has great possibility for hand loading well over 3K. I have two 6.5 Creedmoors and I wish i had built my Curtis on a long action for OAL to fit the mag (Accurate Mags). I chambered it with a PTG match reamer. Petersen SP brass, CCI mag primer H4350 42.2, .20 off the lands and consistent 2770 fps .33 groups at 100. I personally have no need to exceed 3k so the Creed works for me but if I did I would either do the proven 6.5-284 or 6.5 PRC, both in a long action for flexibility sake.
