6.5 creedmoor 16” vs 18” velocity

I'm looking at rebarreling a large pattern AR to 6.5 creedmoor, Use of the rifle will be a all around mid range 100-700 yard gun with some 1000 yard stuff everyonce in a blue moon and may take it hunting here and there. I would like to keep it light and handy as possible while keeping it decently accurate with smaller shot strings.

My budget isn't great so I'm looking at faxon big gunner barrels and am debating between 16" and 18 inch. Anyone have any real wold velocity numbers out of a gas gun between the two lengths with heavier (130-150) grain bullets? Thanks .

Gas gun velocities should only be slightly behind bolt gun velocities. Even then, every barrel is different, so use the above as a rough guide.

I was in a similar position and went 16.5" to save weight. The gun is quite loud and I don't like shooting it without a suppressor on it. If starting from scratch I'd go 18".

Thanks for the info, I'm starting with 2 new psa guns with 18 inch midlength 308 barrels, I'm going to shoot them both and pick the worst shooter of the 2 for a rebarrel. I was planning on 18 inch 6.5 but can save $60 going with the 16 inch faxon over the 18 inch... I will probably wait for Black Friday and get the 18 inch... or just stop being poor lol

I personally wouldn't consider a 150gr 6.5mm bullet in a 16" 6.5CM.

For me, a 130 is perfect for a 6.5CM capacity case. Plenty for shooting steel WAY out there, and works well for deer-sized game out to 600-700.

Yeah I've never owned a 6.5 creedmoor, so I wasn't sure of capabilities , I know that my 6.5x55 does great with heavy bullets and a lot of people say it's in the same class as the creedmoor and 260. But I'm guessing that's with the 6.5x55 in a low pressure factory load for old firearms.

Beware short gas systems with the 6,5. It's a high pressure cartridge and port pressures are high. All sorts of potential drama possible.

I have 3 aero precision barrels (18, 20 and 22") with standard rifle length gas system that runs perfect even on factory ammo. No op signs or primers popping. Didn't even have an adjustable gb. I do have several +2 gas ( PR and BSF) and they are more problems than other standard length systems (cbi, faxon and 2A).

18 to 20" is a good compromise, but a 16" can be a performance loss?
