6.5 build

I thought of it as well as even the 6.5 jap but when he mentioned "cheaper to shoot".. I discounted it.

Powder and brass being the most expensive variables in your reloads, I disagree. Swede brass is about the cheapest brass available from Lapua and the Swede case is more efficient than the overbore Norma or Weatherby. I like to shoot my rifles a lot, so I stay away from the ultra fast overbore gas hogs. Barrell life suffers when your start eveyr pill at 3000fps or more. Don't get me wrong, it's fun but I'd spend way more money at the gunsmith's shop rebarrelling and less at the reloading store.

a 6.5x57AI is a snap to build, and they will push a 140 grain bullet out to 2900+fps. Should be very accurate, as it's not an over bore cartridge. Dies are just as easy. You use a .257AI bushing die, and run the chamber reamer thru the Forster seater sleeve. Forster also sells a complete .257AI die set, but wouldn't go that way.

Interesting as most people i've talked to owning 6.5-06 imp or 6.5-284 are only getting 1200-1800 rounds of top accuracy barrel life??

a 6.5-06 or a 6.5-06 improved should see a much greater throat life than the 6.5/284. The 6.5 Gibbs appears to have a shortened neck verses the 6.5-06AI, but velocity gains are minimal. I'd go with a 6.5-06AI built off of 25-06 cases, or better yet built off of the .280 case

Take a look at the Savage LR Hunter in 6.5x284.....ready to go otta the

box....add glass & rings and go shoot.......You'll find that a 9# wizz bang magnum

sending a 140 gr 6.5mm 3400 fps will be no fun to shoot.......as mentioned don't overlook

the plain jane 260 or 6.5x55...the x55 may be referred to an 'old man's gun' by some..

It wouldn't still be around if it were not a good cartridge design after 100+ yrs...

My current 6.5's consist of .....Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 SS/lam....elk in freezer this past winter...

260 Ack Imp & 6.5x55 Savage s/shot actions & Pac Nor 8 twist tubes

6500 4-30 Tactical & Millett 4-16 TRS Tactical for glass...Burris Sig rings with + & - 10 inserts

Choate Varminter stocks..these two are LR table guns weighing in at +18#

you guys are making good sense, I really am impressed with the 6.5-284 Norma, and warming up to the 260rem as neat little short action:)
