Despite its slopey shoulders & relatively long length the old 6.5-06 shoots real good. I use whatever powders I can scrounge up - like 4000MR, IMR4831, R-S Hunter, R-S Magnum. I have some H1000 & RL23 stashed away. My rifles have 8 twists. I shoot 123 ELDM's at rodents and 140 Barnes Match Burners & 140 Hornady hpbt's at targets. In the distant past I used LC 06 Match brass, surplus H4831 (salvaged from pulled 20mm cannon rounds, red & yellow cardboard container) & Sierra 140 Game King bullets. Recoil is reasonable & with right bullet it would be good for elks. I had some 2 1/2-gallon gas cans filled with surplus H4831 & a new Douglas #6, 6.5-barrel cost $65 complete, threaded, fitted, chambered, polished & blued.
