6.5-06 vs 6.5X284 vs 6.5 Sherman

I did indeed get it done.

It was a crazy summer.

I was transferred with my employer to NY. My guns were at the Smith when I got notified my home had sold and i had three weeks to remove myself.

Only problem was the timing of everything.

I got the stuff back from the Smith 3 days before I was headed east with all my belongings.

As such, I have noty had a chance to take it to the range.

I have everything I need to load up some rounds but I am a little leery of firforming the brass and toasting the new barrel. Probably going to pony up some cash and get a hydraulic die made up. That way I load up a couple using the dies, head somewhere safe to fire them and then get Hornady to make me up a set that get me pretty close to actual. Need to talk to Hornady and see just how close the Hydraulic die will get me if I start with a sized die. If I was sizing something dramatic they say it gets you 95% of teh way there.

I just use 11 gr of unique, fill the case with cornmeal, and plug it with a piece of paper towel to fireform for my 6.5 gibbs (a sherman by another name)

I have 100 rounds of Lapua I wish to fireform....

Heat and Carbon are what kill the barrel throats as I understand it.

Does the Unique burn cooler?

How much time between fireformed shots is appropriate to wait?

I would hate to shorten the barrel life as getting a good smith and the time lost has to be weighed against the cost of custom die...

So here goes....My Blackberry is not the best quality camera and my lighting is attrocious but you can get and idea.....The first few are my 6.5-06 sendero action HS stock Brux Barrel 8.5 twist, the blued gun is my wifes 22-250 that I had a bull barrel attached to trued 30-06 action and bedded in HS stock(nice spider web green), the last is my 6-284. These were the three I had varying amounts of work done to this summer. All are bedded and accurized/trued actions. In case your wondering, that is a Cowan rest.

nice guns. Regarding the 6.5-06, you mentioned lapua brass, I assume its 30-06 head stamp. Other than progressive sizing to 270 then 6.5, what are you talking about the fire forming and hydraulic dies? Is this some other wild cat??

You are correct. I will use 30-06 Lapua and neck it down. May have to turn the necks with the resizing....

Ideally want the brass to be formed to the chamber and then use Lee Collet die and competition seater to make the loads without the wear and tear of firing the first 100 rounds.

I did not have it built tight so perhaps the full length resizing will suffice but it is a long winter and if I can squeeze a bit more accuraccy out of the loading process then I am game.

I hate to throw this in i was thinking about the 264 hawk and the 6.5 284 and i am going wow! after reading this dose anyone have any experience with the 264 hawk?

From Zeglin's book "Wildcat Cartridges, I get:

Case Capacity of Gibbs - 70gr 35 degree shoulder
Case Capacity of Hawk - 63.43 25 degree shoulder

From Sherman his is - 70 gr at base of neck or 74-75 to top of case. 40degree shoulder

The differences in them have to do wth the improved shoulder angle.

Sherman's is designed similarly but his 40 degree shoulder desigen allows for .30 neck which he says improves accuracy over the ballistically equivelant Gibbs. By the way, I read where he mentions that the Sherman and therefore the Gibbs are similar ballistically to the 6.5 WSM.

At the time I was building my rifle, Sherman's reamer was in use. On his suggestion I went ahead with the 6.5-06 and if it is not totally sweet, I will arrange to use the Sherman reamer and make it a 6.5 Sherman...

a finished gibbs beside a 270 win
