500 yard rig

Iv been tryng to find a 223 with 1-9 twist so I could then make it ai. If not I may get the 22.250 with 1-14 and rechamber it to 22.243 so I may be able to get away with a heavier bullets with all the velocity.

Tikka T-3 varminter in 223 is an 8 twist, would be easy to open the bolt face, use a 22-250 mag, rechamber and have an 8 twist 22-250 AI or standard.

Skip the 204, 223, and the 22-250. Take a serious look at a heavy barreled 243. Win. With next to nothing in recoil, and with a 55 grain bullet it shoots faster then the 22-250 and flatter. It's actually flatter and bucks the wind better then the 204.win

If you wanted authority at 500-600 yards then the 75 grain Vmax, or 87 grain Vmax loaded and shot around 3400 fps will knock anything you aim at down on is ***. It gives you th option Of deer as well as coyotes and Rock chucks. Shoots faster, flatter, hits harder, gives you better BC with no recoil!!

Why not the 22-250 A.I. or 22-243, 22-243 A.I. with the 75 gr A-Max, you can push 3400 to 3750 fps and BC outa this world. Even the .22 cal with 75 gr bullets has what it takes for one shot deer kills and Prairie dogs to ??? yds.
Well 500 yds no problem and 700 yds no problem with hits on good days at 1000 to 1100 yds. We shoot 4 to 12" groups at 900 yds depending on day and wind, with best 2.65" and worst is miss the board on hot windy day.
Stay at 500 yds and I can use my 22-250 A.I. with 50 gr V-Max with 41.5 grs of 414 and velocities just to fast to mention, a great caliber for the 500 all day shooting fun.gun)

if you are building take a google at the 224 tth ( 6mm-22) 75 g amax at 3700fps 1x8 twist 3in. high @ 100 still 3 high @ 300 5 low@ 500 27in. pipe works very well so far dont know about barrel life

The best i've ever used so far on coyotes for 1st shots at any distance encountered to ~600 is my 223 AI AR using the 65 JLK Low Drag (BC~.4), but i had to take some off the nose to get better terminal effect, and VLD magazine.

Trying the new 53 V-Max this next season some and am anticipating good results to ~500 or so.

Next upper on that rig will be an 8-twist though for 75 A-Max and DPMS VLD magazine to allow for magazine length seating and a bit better capacity.

65 SGK worked well enough to 550 on this coyote too--

Be interesting to see what the best varmint terminal ballistics is beyond 500 yds. comparing big 22 cal. Sierras, A-Max's, Berger's, etc. Seems there's little intel. on that aspect. I'd assume the A-Max would win considering bullet upsetting quality of the poymer tip, but...?

This year my 22-243 A.I. with 80 gr A-Max @ 3450fps did great out to 700 yds.
The 22-6mm would work as well or better too.

The A-Max might cause a little patch work on yotes, so the SMK might work better.gun)

Oh, my 22-243 A.I. with 40gr V-Max running 4850 made 400 to 460 without much wind adjustment at all. My friends were amazed to hold on at 450 and still hit a Prairie Dog with some wind.

Been shooting 75gr A-Max since 1997 in the 22-243 A.I.

Fred Moore of SSS gave me a load of around 3700 fps that worked great in the first two barrels, but this third barrel doesn't allow that load at all. My original load of 46.5 to 47 gr Rel #19 with the 75 A-Max. This barrel now likes 44.4 grs of Rel #22 @ 3470 fps so far, but as the round count go up, maybe the vel. too.
With a little more powder.

When my 22.250 barrel goes it's gonna be a 22.243 with a 1-8 twist. But for now iv been using my 243 with 70 gr ballistic tips farthest kill so far is 400 yards that it did alot for that range and small bullet. I'm running 3610 fps with benchmark.

I'd like to have one with 1-8 twist but I'm in process of building 6.5-284 and funds are low so they are the only ones I have a choice for the 204 is savage and 22.250 is rem

I've had plenty of Remingtons & Savages & if I was shopping for a factory varmint rifle there is little chance a Remington would be considered. Remington makes some nice rifles, some of which shoot well stock & most of the rest can be made to shoot well. That said, I've never seen a (modern) Savage that didn't shoot as well or better than a comparable Remington. A 500 yard varmint rifle MUST be accurate, so if you aren't going to customize, stick with a Savage.

Although I have yet to own a .204, I'm sure I will soon. The .22-250 is proven. Both are good rounds & both will handle varmints to 500 yards. The .22-250 has the potential to buck the wind better, could reach out a little further than the .204 while the .204 has almost no recoil. Each has an advantage. If 300 yards was your max I would say stick with the .204, since you want to shoot to 500 I would reach for a .22-250.

Buano, you are pretty much telling the truth about the Savage and the 22/250. It can reach out there with the proper bullet and twist. You also said you haven't had a 204 ...yet. I hope you do ! I'm not so inclined to the 204 Ruger round. I do have two AR15 uppers in 20 TAC (driver). Last year I whacked five prairie dogs from 425 to 475 yards. You are right here too; there ain't a lot of energy left at that range. However, before I'd go to the 22/250; I would look very hard at the 223 A.I. Lots less powder, much less recoil, very, very accurate, very, very fast ! How fast? Mine has been chrno'd at over 3600fps with a 55gr. pill. Case life ain't much; keeps enlarging the primer pocket. Can't imagine why? LOL. But, that's the only pressure sign I get. Yep, that's hot 22/250 velocity ! It shoots in the 2s and 3s too. Hard to go wrong with either choice. As Buano said, they have plus's and minus's.

poked a coyote at 467yds with 224tth put the cross hair on his bottom jaw and hit him dead centre of his breastbone not very much holding the two parts of wiley e togeather after that 75 amax sure suprised me and him

Well guys I went out and got a 6mm-284 with 26 inch heavy barrel and 1-9 1/8 thinking bout 95 gr nosler ballistic tips for deer and groundhogs. Execpt past 500 on groundhogs. But does anyone have this caliber and use them on chucks or deer?

I have a 6-06 which is pretty much the same case capacity. (splitting hairs) I use 70gr Nosler ballistic tips for PD's, 88gr Berger FB HIGH BC Varmints for yote and 95gr Berger VLD's for deer an goats. It is more rifle then these animals will ever need. It wears a 1:10 krieger. I stay away form ballistic tips for anything but ground dwelling critters. I have had them blow up on the shoulders of coyotes in my .223AI The 70gr Nosler @ 3800 FPS sends those PD's into the air in chunks. :D

Good choice in a 500 yard gun.
