460 Rowland

I've been using a 1911, .460 Roland conversion for the last 4 years. I've killed plenty of big hogs with it. It's not as heavy as the big revolvers, I use the Wilson Combat 8 round mags but you can get the 10 rounders if you want more. It is more powerful than the 10 mm and holds more than the big revolvers. You can look up the specs on the net. I have found the ammo is as available as 10mm and .44 Magnum here. Ive shot a little over 300 rounds through it and never had a malfunction. It puts 200 pound hogs down with authority. I've never shot a bear but I'm sure it would hammer them. I carried a Ruger Blackhawk .44 Magnum in a hip holster before going to the .460 Roland, I carry the .460 in all of my .45 ACP holsters. I just ordered the Guides Choice Cheat Holster from Diamond D Leather out of Alaska.

I have a Wilson Combat 460 Rowland and it shoots and functions great. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it as bear defense. I t's accurate, powerful and easy to carry.

the 460 is definitely a step up from the 45 acp in recoil but it's manageable. I have one friend that shot it a couple times and it failed to cycle for him (limp wrist). I told him to hold it more rigidly and that solved the problem. No one else had this problem.

I also have a 10 inch 460 S&W with a scope (weighs about as much as a bolt gun) and I guarantee that if you let me get it out and get ready...then turned a bear loose on me, I'd likely only get one shot off...truly amazing recoil. I can't handle it. I have it for long range stuff but it hurts every time I pull the trigger and that's from the bench with bipod attached

I'm interested in the 460 Rowland. I've got a Kimber 1911 45acp I'd like to convert. Will the ACPs still shoot OK when the conversion is done?Whats needed to convert it to the Rowland besides a barrel. Who do you recommend To do the machine work if needed. What is the cartridge based on. Reloadable I imagine fairly easy? Sorry, I know I have lots of questions.

You can internet order .460 Roland ammo from www.460rowland.com
I buy my .460 Roland ammunition from Clark's Custom guns in Louisiana.
The 185 grain is shooting 1575 FPS, the 230 grain HP is 1350 FPS, the 240 grain HP is 1300 FPS, and the 255 grain Hard Cast Lead is 1300 FPS.

.45 ACP dies will load it. It's a longer cased .45 ACP. It's easy to load for. No machine work needed, just drop the conversion kit in. If you change the springs out you can run the .45 ACP with no issues.
You can get a spring tuning pack and find out what weight spring that you need to function with the .45 ACP. The kit is around $20.

I have a 460 Rowland in a Glock 21 long slide that I put together. I am a 10mm supporter I suppose you could say but a 45 caliber 255 grain hardcast at 1300 fps ain't no joke out of a semi-auto pistol. And I have 14 rounds of it available in the Glock. I don't have bears but it puts down whitetail and large hogs with authority.

I do not shoot a compensator on mine and I'm sure I'm on borrowed time because of frame hammer but it's not a high volume shooter for me so I'm not overly concerned.

Many thanks. I did go on Rowland's web site. I'm buying the conversion. I know the 1911 pretty well and will have no problem doing the work. I use my Dillon press for 45acp. Sounds like I can adjust it for the Rowland? Do you find it needs the compensator Or can you shoot it comfortably without it? Big improvement on recoil?
