45 ACP on Brown Bear.????

Well last year I went on a moose hunt in Alaska and carried a 10mm with me. My guide asked what was that for? I said in case a Brown bear. Guide said the only thing that's good for is to put that to your head right before he EATS YOU!! 🤣
True story!
I have a friend that rafted in Alaska. He took a long a 357Mag. The guide ask if they had anything to protect themself. Yes he replied a 357mag. Guide said great. You can stick it in your mouth and touch it off. That way you'll feel not pain. 🤣 😂 I still 🤣 even today.

!987 Montana game warden Lou Kis, was in the process of relocating a 500 plus pound male Grizzly Bear. They took the bear to the Bob Marshall wilderness area in a culvert trap in back of a Chevy pickup. Lou got on top of the trap and raised the door gate, the bear jumped to the ground. The bear stood up started to maul the wardens leg, and pulled the whole unsecured culvert trap off the truck. Bear and warden were in a mortal battle. Lou took his S&W 357 Magnum out of his holster and won the wrestling match, with few shots from that 357. They called for a helicopter and flew Lou out of there so they could fix his leg.

I believe that a little different between an Alaska Brown Bear, and a Giz. Correct me if I am wrong.

Watched the video of this incident a few times, bear looked very capable of violence. 500 plus pound grizzly, with a different zip code, ha ha , pretty much same animal. Got a S&W 357 mag, with ya on the belt will definitely use it to stop the bear. If the facts vary from legend, always print the legend.

That's the joke I was referring to earlier.
It's timeless

Through the decades, a lot of big bears have been killed with various handguns, and some were intentional by serious handgun hunters and some were in desperation. Remember, carrying a handgun for protection is a last ditch weapon, and it is better than relying on a sharp stick, rock, knife or trying to set the Olympic record for the 100m dash.

One of the fellas I used to black bear hunt with wore a 1911 .45 acp and I think it was good backup.

When I lived in Alaska, I saw just about every caliber carried for backup.

A good many years ago in Alaska, an Indian lady killed the record griz with a .22 rifle. The bear was after her and some family.
That's one lucky lady!

Yes and she was in the brush along a trail the bear was walking, not coming after them, She shot it in the temple as it walked but. A 22 in the eye would be a lucky shot, any were else on a brown bear /grizzly coming after you , wont slow it down or turn it. **** it off more yes

.45acp vs determined, angry charging brown bear...

bye-bye!!
"Bye-bye" to who??? Hunter or the predator???? I have read many articles on different bear attacks and what people were using for their personal protection. I remember reading an article, I believe the incident happened in Alaska???? It was about a father and son who were in a remote cabin when a grizzly attempted to enter their cabin. The father was upstairs in a bedroom and the son was in a downstairs bedroom. The son woke up to the bear trying to enter through a window, upon which time the son started screaming. The father came downstairs with a .45 ACP, the bear dropped down below the window, the father emptied the magazine into the bear and the bear ran off. In the following morning the bear was found dead 100 yards from the cabin. The father did a good job emptying the .45. I personally carry a G20 with 200gr hard cast bullets for black bear hunting over bait in a ground blind. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to use what I am hunting with over the G20, but.... sometimes stuff happens and that is not always possible for one reason or another. In my opinion the .45 ACP will/can work, but prefer something heavier in a sidearm.

When I carry an auto for bear defense, typically it is my 45 Super running 250 hard cast at 1,100fps.
Otherwise, it is a 44mag or 45 Colt+p+ in a revolver with both loaded with heavy, hard cast WFN.

Anything is better than nothing.

The commonality of using a pistol in self defense is over 90% success. That includes many weak cartridge choices.
There is a lot of ammo testing results on line including video of penetration test. Even the 9mm with the right bullet penetrates deeply. The 45ACP with the right bullets nearly equals the 10mm with 200gr hardcast.. the 45 Super is equivalent to or exceeds the 10mm.
It's a situation I don't want to test but I carry a pistol always.
