.45-70 Grizz Defense

Like 340Wby-4-Everything said , be certain of the laws and regulations about carrying a Rifle during the "Archery Only" hunting season .

If you are allowed to carry your .45-70 , I agree with having it loaded with a Hard-Cast , Lead , Wide , Flat-nosed bullet of 430 - 500+ grain weight , in a +P factory loading from Underwood , Buffalo Bore , Garrett , or Grizzly Ammunition companies .
Buy what is available , but buy enough to practice shooting them , because you will be in for an "Awakening" , and a new definition of "Felt Recoil", due to the light weight of the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun .
My Marlin 1895 .45-70 weighs 6 pounds 11 ounces , and my Underwood 430gr. HC @1925fps will rock
you .

This has me wanting a new 1895… I might have a problem… had to share, top down
1. Wild West Co-Pilot break down
2. Arms Room Break down
3. Arms Room upgraded

If I were bowhunting I wouldn't really want to carry a rifle also unless somebody was with you without a bow and had a rifle or shotgun. Maybe the guide or buddy. I'd carry a pistol and maybe spray also. Just me. Digging your rifles though !

I started to suggest that…..but, he has a brand new Marlin GG 45-70 he "has to" bring with him! 😁 memtb

I would NOT hesitate to use my .45-70 on anything that walks. I loaded up my Sharps rifle with a 500 hard cast lead bullet. I was sighting the rifle in up at our cabin and had the target set up at 50 yards. Upon firing the first shot I noticed wood flying from behind the target. going up to see where I hit the target I walked back and found the bullet entered the center of a 10" rock maple tree, passed completely through taking out a decent chunk then dug itself into another rock maple farther back to where I couldn't feel it with my knife point! That my friend is some serious penetration. There isn't a skull thick enough for this bullet to bust through - unless of course its my teen age grandson....LOL

As others have said flat nose hard cast 400Gr and up - you will be fine as long as you hit where you are aiming.

I have a buddy - retired guide. Had a hunter show up to bear hunt over bait. Confirmed rifle zero at camp prior to first night hunting. First evening he dropped ole dude off in the stand and told him there are several griz in the area if you shoot a black bear stay in the tree to we get back and we will all go get it together. He said it was about 1K yards or so back to the truck and about the time he got to the truck he heard his hunter shoot so him and one of the helpers head back in to see if he got the bear. Hunter was still in the tree like he was told. He shot the bear through the trees before he even got close to the bait. They start tracking it and get into really thick under brush so thick his helper was on his belly crawling following the blood trail. The helper yelled "he's coming out" and got off a couple shots with 44mag pistol. Hunter and guide were backing off to side so they didnt shoot the helper if they missed when the bear came out. My buddy the guide had 44Mag lever loaded up with hard cast bullets and hunter shooting 300 unloaded on this bear. 6 more 44 rounds and 2 300 win rounds before they stopped this bear. Problem with the whole thing is it wasnt a black bear it was a griz with that was almost completely black. Bear had 11 rounds in it before it was stopped. Hunter's first shot was square in the @ss. Hunter and my buddy the guide both paid huge fines hunter lost hunting rights for life. Even game warden was amazed how many rounds the 515lb griz took to stop it. My buddy switched to a Marlin guide gun for the next season running heavy hard casts his adage not mine, "I would rather hit them with a peterbuilt than a chevy" haha

Man that's too bad about the outcome but glad they didn't get hurt!

All good points, I might of missed it but is the OP actually thinking about toting both his bow and his 45/70 at the same time...? I guess I could see taking it along for a camp gun but other than that I see zero reason to bring it..
