45/70 Bullet

We've been using the Barnes 300gr TSX FB bullets in our 45-70. Out to 100 yards they are rack drivers We use them black bear hunting. We have 1895 Marlins and one Ruger XBL, they shoot lights out. We've never recovered a bullet.

I also run the FTX 325 gr. Over IMR 4198 at 2150 fps. Packs a punch but all we have killed with it is Black Bear.
Great idea with cutting the tips down rather than cutting down the case. Wish I would have thought of that. What a pain in the but that was.

They all ^^^^^ will kill whitetails decisively if properly placed. If you want to flatten the rainbow-like trajectory, use a 250 Hornady Monoflex bullet and a max load of 1680 from the Barnes book.

Correct. And, I was mistaken on the bullet the XTP is flat. No need to trim. The FTX needs a trim on the case or the end of the bullet.

Looking/asking to buy/reload ? Factory would be most everything, but reloading the 250 & 300 tsx would probably be a better choice than the 350a-frame

Unless you are hunting were you have to use mono bullets, I would suggest you stick to cast or cup and core. You can't make a 45 70 into a flat shooting rifle and they are way nicer to shoot at 1500 fps than 2200 fps. They also kill every bit as good at 1500 fps. Millions of Buffalo were killed with lead going 1100 fps. The hole is what kills, there is no hydrostatic shock effect with these.

.451 in the 45-70?? Or are you shooting this bullet in another cartridge?

I'm shooting it in another cartridge (45 raptor).

Dennis at Fury Custom Bullets in Michigan makes the best 45 caliber bullets in the world. His 45 ST2 absolutely hit like a truck. Bonded. He has thinner jackets available for us SML guys but I them up in 45/70 and 450BM and they are just as fantastic.

He just sent me some gorgeous 200gr bonded 358's and a pile of 400gr 452's
