Take a hard look at Maker T Rex bullets. I shoot the 250 gr in .451 diameter and they are devastating on deer.
I forgot about that. Yes, it's on my shortlist to try.Take a hard look at Maker T Rex bullets. I shoot the 250 gr in .451 diameter and they are devastating on deer.
shouldn"t have to trim at all going in a CVA single shot am I rightThe XTP requires trimming your case down an additional .060", since the bullet tip makes it too long. Standard is 2.100"
I didn't want to ruin a bunch of 45-70 cases by trimming them short, so I got a pair of scissors and cut the tip off all mine. It didn't affect the accuracy at all. And I didn't do a stellar job cutting them off straight.
After cutting the tips, it resembles the 410 grain Sub-X bullets from Hornady. These 410's, in my Henry Mod X shoot very well subsonic.
I shoot Lehigh Defense on several of my rifles they are BADASSI have only shot factory ammo (Hornady 325 FTX) on mine and still have a couple of boxes left before I reload.

Man thats awesome thanks for the infoI have shot a LOT of animals with a 45-70 over the past 55 years, particularly bears. I have used about every bullet commonly made for them. My four favourites in descending order, 350 grain Hornady round nose, 405 Remington, 405 Cast in 20 Brinel, and for lighter game the 300 grain Hornady Hollow Point. If I was restricted to one bullet it would be the 350 RN due to its terminal effects and the fact it passes through pretty much every time. Have NEVER had to track anything very far that I shot with a 45-70. Typically bear will run quite a ways, they don't with the 45-70, usually dead within view of where they were hit.
These were shot at 100 yards with a Remlin 1895 with an 16" barrel.
