45/70 Bullet

Looking for bullet recommendation in 45/70 for whitetails a buddy of mine wants me to load for him

250 grain TSX is awesome on deer. But, I typically use the 300 grain XTP at "ruger only" loading. The projectile expands to over .70"

300 grain hollow point from Hornady or Sierra are good options. If you want a better chance of an exit wound , the Hornady 350 flat point is a great option.

The XTP requires trimming your case down an additional .060", since the bullet tip makes it too long. Standard is 2.100"

I didn't want to ruin a bunch of 45-70 cases by trimming them short, so I got a pair of scissors and cut the tip off all mine. It didn't affect the accuracy at all. And I didn't do a stellar job cutting them off straight.

After cutting the tips, it resembles the 410 grain Sub-X bullets from Hornady. These 410's, in my Henry Mod X shoot very well subsonic.

Nope that is the FTX, the XTP is a flat profile

I have taken many animals with Hornady 300 gr flat nose and 350 gr round nose and Reloader 7.
My brother used the Barnes 250 gr bullet mentioned above with great results.

Right! My bad. Google mislead me. I Googled XTP and it thought I was dyslexic and showed me FTX.

I do like the FTX after some modifications. Berrys plated 350 gr have been very accurate as well.

I tried 300 grain Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip Hunting Bullets. Never could get these to shoot right. Probably just my gun.

All of it with IMR 4198. The 410 gr subs took 14 gr of Unique to get over 1000 fps. The internet tells us it only takes 9-10 grains.
