4064 for 223

When I began loading for 5.56, I quickly ran into problems with pierced primers completely absent other pressure signs. After doing some research, I switched to magnum primers and the issue went away. Mag primers have thicker cups and are able to withstand the higher pressures of NATO spec loads. My research also indicated that the mil-spec primers are themselves mag primers.

Here is an article from John Calhoon on the subject of the various small rifle primers and their pressure tolerance:

Primers And Pressure

Thanks again! That was an interesting read and made a lot of sense. Now I need to get some components together and start the development phase. I am hoping to get my hands on some LC. Looks like I will get a better capacity and I know they can handle higher pressures.
