Hi,

I am thinking about trying to build a 375 based on the Nosler cartridge family. I am looking for a little more case capacity than the 375 Ruger, but don't quite want to step up to the Norma/Lapua Case dimensions unless I have to. I intend to use it suppressed so I have a threshold I am trying to stay just below plus I have a Sako A-V Action that I am trying to build on so i prefer to keep the same magnum bolt face and I am limited to a 3.62 COAL. I have looked at the ultramag family but want to try bullets a little more suited for long shots. I have been teetering between a 33 Nosler build and 375-XX Nosler as these seem to fit the profile. The 375 seems to have more interest to me as that is the caliber of the rifle currently and I plan to run a 22-24" barrel. I have a few questions to ask if anyone has any input:

1. Has anyone done one of these or interested in one? What are your thoughts?
2. What is the largest Neck size up that is reasonable to do. 26 Nosler has Norma Brass available, but .260 to .375 is a HUGE increase.

Thanks

Dan

A 375 at the 33nosler case length would fit nice into a 3.6" mag length. Starting off nosler brass thas a fair amount of expanding neck diameter, but done in 2-3 steps with some annealing and it should work ok. Or use 375rum brass and push the shoulder back to 33 nosler shoulder length and trim/neck turn. Either way it would be a good project I think.

A 33 Nosler won't gain anything over a 375 Ruger except it's a little shorter. Even a 30 Nosler is almost the same capacity as a 375 Ruger (within 1-2 grains). The 28 Nosler is about 3 grains more than the 30 Nosler and almost the same as a 300 Norma.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the 26/28 mainly for a smidge more capacity than the ruger but maybe that is a mute point. What are thoughts for best possible brass. I haven't used any Hornady brass. Would it be work making a 375-26(or28) nosler for brass quality over a 375 ruger?

What kind of accuracy is everyone getting from the new fn Winchester's? The last two I bought are shooting .5 moa with Nosler factory loads

The Nosler case won't gain anything over the 375 Ruger; the capacity is so close that it wouldn't make any difference. I have both a 375 Ruger and a 338/375 Ruger and the Hornady brass lasts 5-6 firings with "stout" loads in both chamberings, so brass quality is at least equal to Nosler brand in my experience.

There's not enough case capacity in either the Nosler case or the 375 Ruger to effectively use bullets over 300gr but a high BC bullet around 300gr would work pretty well at around 2800fps depending on your barrel length.

You will have best results by starting a new thread rather than starting a new discussion within this one.

A 28 Nosler necked up would be about 4 to 5 grains more capacity which is less than 50fps gain. I thougjt about doing the same thing before I ordered 375 Ruger dies, brass, and a reamer.

I am glad to see there are others thinking about this project too. A 375 Ruger would get the ball rolling a little easier, guess I just need to figure out if it would be sufficient. I was hoping to run 300-330 Gr. bullets and trying to drive them 2600 or faster with a 22" tube. I am trying to build a short stout rifle for guiding (trying to carry loads of energy to 500-600 yards. I am currently running a 338 Lapua). Any of you guys use your 375 Ruger much for long range?

375 rugers alot cheaper to shoot. Brass from hornady can be had right around $1.00 a case. 375 rum is a good step up but unless you get a short throat or get a rum lengh action you will probably be stuck single feed with the high bc bullets.

Idk if a 375 nosler would gain much over a 375 ruger. You could also see about an improved 375 ruger with a long throat.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
