358 Winchester performance at 300 yds

I shot two deer this year with a 358 Winchester Hornady 200 gr. SP traveling at approximately 2300 fps. Both went 4 legs up immediately. I like the performance of this caliber/bullet at this velocity. I'd like to buy a barrel/gun that can mimic this velocity and performance at 250 to 400 yards. I'm thinking 35 Whelan or 358 Norma mag in a 26" barrel.

Any input would be appreciated.

Jim
I have used a 358 win on moose, elk and bare all went down on the spot, even used some old silvdrtips.

I will tell you my 358 Norma is a 358 win plus about 150 to 200 yards...it's great other than finding headstamped brass nowadays almost like owning a wildcat

Norma and other European ammunition makers can hook you up but, like you said it is a specialty round in the USA, especially for headstamped brass. For me though, it isn't a long-range caliber due to bullet options.

I load for my uncles .358 Norma. It's a fun round. We push the 178gr hammer at 3100fps out of a 16" barrel. Looks like it should open the bullet properly out to 500yards. According to AB using 1800fps min speed to open the bullet.

I appreciate all the responses and suggestions. After chatting with med358-boise, I'm starting to come around to the idea that shot placement had as much to do with my impressions of this bullet/caliber as the actual bullet. Coming from a traditional bow hunting background I have always just taken broadside double lung or heart lung shots. Both of these deer were taken with something closer to high shoulder shots. I'm still very impressed with both the reaction of the animal and the subdued reaction of the animals around the one that was shot. They startled, but only for a few yards or so before going about their business.

So I guess my questions are: a. At what speed will this bullet still have the same effect on deer with a high shoulder shot, b) are high shoulder shots more dependent on speed and pressure or bullet diameter and weight.

I've only shot three deer high enough to be close to the spine or nervous system and all three were with heavier calibers, 2 with the 358 and one with a 50 cal FTX, so I don't have much of a database to go on.

I have a pristine Model 99 in 358 Win. That thing hits like the hammer of Thor. I have not shot moose or elk, but the deer and pigs I have shot have all been DRT. That was all with factory ammo 🤮. I can't wait to get some handloads through it.

338/06 Ackley/A-Square to me is the sweet spot of the 30-06 length action size for a non-magnums due to a vast array of bullet options and superior ballistics over most other options without getting into real wildcats.

The 358~411Hawk and other similar calibers though are a real hot hammer if you don't need factory loads and don't burn through hundreds of rounds a year.

There are also a few of the Big Boys i thought of in years past but boolets stopped me from further pursuit.

358 STA
358 STW
WITH THE correct bullets you should get what you want.

358 win in a Browning BLR was something I have wanted for decades

I have the exact same results
I also shoot the Hornady 200 interlock bullet
It's what they built their business on and it still works today
Getting a little expensive if you buy if you are limited to off the shelf ammo
And if you have been reloading for while you have enough loaded for the next 5 generations 😂

You speak of Ackley and. A-square
You wouldn't happen to have or know someone who has any
460 A-Square brass
I had a set of dies built and have |460 Weatherby brass that works but have to anneal and the. Cut to size
Just wondering

No, nothing along those lines. I ended up going with a double rifle for the Safari cartridges.
