true. the reason that a whelen is such a hammer is that they do NOT have any long range bullets. most all 35 cal bullets are designed for performing on animals. And when the speeds are up, they're very impressive.It seems the 338-06 is a good idea as there are so many 338 bullets out there.
If this is for short range, why would you want a long range bullet?

With the AI you don't have head space issues, and I think you can make a more accurate round.
Mine is a pre 64 mod 70 re bored back in the late 80's by my father 23" skinny barel. weighs 7 1/2 lbs scoped. I'm getting 2840 with a 225 game king. At a tad over 1 MOA it's a hammer out to 300 yds. Shoot it 2 or 3 time on the bench, and I'll forget my name, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
