338 EDGE vs 1276 yd PLATE

thanks shawn, DM mag system @ 3.9"???......very interested. Ya know if you need any help with the design or anything I have everything to make it happen. 3D cad, cnc programs and even a new Haas cnc center just to build gun parts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Left handed??? I didnt even notice. lucky for you the windage knob is on the corect side of the scope...:)

It is very nice to have a wife that suports like that. I dont know what I would do without mine.

What kind of on target results do you get with those big SMK's on deer and elk at that range?

also what brand barrel is that?

JD,

That is a 30" Hart barrel, 1-10 twist .850" standard .250" flutes. I have not tagged a big game animal that far with the 300 SMK. The 300 SMK does a good job at 863 yards though. I have a couple of clients that have made kills on deer over 1200 with them and report full penetration (of course) and a reasonable exit wound. 1 shot @ 1312 yards penetrated both shoulders of a medium whitetail buck and anchored him in his tracks. I hope to get some "distance" on a black bear this fall.

Yep a few friends of mine get some great groups with the H1000 in the 338/300 rum,got to love the 300 SMK ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Shawn,

Nice shooting! I am getting the 338 Edge itch. I have a 338 RUM and love it.
Are you shooting a Hart barrel? Any chance of getting a picture of the brake?
Have you done much with the Nosler 225 gr Accubond in the 338 Edge? I would think that it would do a decent job, even at 1k yds.

Regards,

It is in fact a Hart barrel. I will post a picture with all of the DE brakes soon. I have done some work with the 225 NAB it shoots quite well @ 3270-3300 fps. I used some RL22, RL25, & H1000. The 225 shoots flat to 1000 but is not as good in wind drift. Elevation is much easier than wind drift I like to give my mechnical advantage to the wind drift department. The NAB is a much better game bullet. I talked to Nosler R&D about a 275-300 gr NAB. They said that would never happen, to bad it would the ticket. They said that the bullet would not stablize in a factory barrel and they wouldn't market a bullet that won't work in a factory barrel. I'd switch if they would make as big a bullet as they could that would stablize say a 260 gr. Until then I'll stick with the 300 SMK, I will scrafice some bullet performance for bullet placement.

Thanks for the reply Shawn. I have a Hart barrel and IMHO, its the way to go.
I have also spoke with the Nosler guys and they have told me the same thing. I have made them aware of LRH and the interest in the big 338's and the need for a heavier bullet.I am certian that the 338 RUM, 340 Wby, and up would have no problem stabilizing a 250 gr AB bullet.
Ya know, maybe if enough guys here tallied up a life time supply, maybe Nosler would make a special run. Something to think about.
I enjoy your stories and look forward to seeing some pics of the DE brakes.

Shawn if you don't mind post some pices of that Brake your building that Kirby is raving about.
what kind of material are you building them out of?

Glad you like the posts. I just dig LR shooting and hunting. I will be dragging the EDGE out to 1882 yards very soon to do some mile+ shooting.

Oh yea! I'll be very interested in seeing your data for this. Please keep us updated.
