338 Edge seating depth: how deep is too deep?

I am having a new barrel installed on my Edge and am contemplating an Accuracy International/CDI detachable magazine setup for the "tacti-cool" look and to have 5 in the magazines. This magazine only allows a COAL of about 3.750".

I seated both a 300 gr Berger and SMK that deep and those bullets are taking up a LOT of space in the case. My last barrel allowed 3.875" COAL.

Will there be any issue with this? I'm not concerned if I loose some velocity. I have a 29" barrel on order so 2800 fps is all I really would like but if this is going to create a major handicap, I might just pass.

When you seat a VERY long bullet like the 300 Berger that deep you are certainly reducing the case capacity jamming the bullet so far down in there. When case capacity is reduced, pressure rises. I don't know how much velocity you would be giving up over a longer seated bullet, but it would be some for sure.

If you are not worried about the velocity loss, I can't think of anything else that would be problem.

There are probably others who can answer "how much" better than I can. Obviously, if you have access to a 338 Edge a little experimentation would be fun and informative.....

What powder are you using? I think I will try it. Again, I am really only after 2800 fps.

buckbrush I'm using 93.gr of retumbo and fed 215's my elevation is 4800 feet and it stays very consistent at all temp ranges good luck if you have any more questions give me a shout

i have my edge bullets oal at 3.950 is this to far???? h1000 gets me 2777 and retumbo 2840 but i have a 30 inch tube.. maybe its to far i'm not sure just want it to shoot... i would think the bullet should be moving a little faster than this????

My Edge was loaded at 3.75" with 91 gr retumbo in a 29" barrel and was getting 2808 fps.

Whats wrong with 2800 fps?? Thats well over 2k range with this caliber.. i get 2715 with my lapua and have no probs killing game past 1100yrds... velocity is not everything myfriends..

My Edge reamer is almost finished. My OAL is north of 4".... closer to 4.1" with the Berger 300 OTM Hybrid. In talking with one of the top EDGE guys, I should hit near 2900 with a 1 - 10 twist tube that finishes at 30 inches.

I hope that new fangled Edge brass hits our shore soon!!!!
