What is your opinion based on re: needing a bigger action than the M700 for the 338 LM ?
My M700 338 LM seems to work just fine. What am I missing ?
You are missing nothing !!!!!
The reason that most smiths don't want to open the bolt face up is actually an extractor
problem. The bolt is smaller than the recommended diameter because when you open it up
to .588 from ,534 you end up with a very thin sako extractor ,
The Rimingtion factory rifle has the Remingtion extractor and works fine. But it takes special
tooling to install a rem extractor in a opened up bolt face so most just cant justify the cost
when a sako or m16 extractor is a lot easier.
The Remingtion IS SAFE in the 338 lapua or they wouldn't sell it with today's liability issues.
If anything weakens the locking lugs on a remingtion it's installing a sako type extractor
because of its location is next to the recoil lug. (Milling the grove next to the lug) in order
to get proper extraction.
This is the reason I like the Weatherby MK 5 action for cartridges that have a bolt face dia.
larger than .534 .The bolt is much larger and has a claw type extractor.
