3200 fps deer gun 18 inch barrel

I used to think I was very good in range estimation until I started using rangefinders, I was humbled on how way off I was. With the right reticle and confirmed actual drops, I was able to point and shoot to harvest (well sort of ) a coyote at 528 yards but I rely heavily on my range finder. I used the 525 yards tick mark and the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS out of my .270 AI did its job ...
FEENIX: Guess I was wrong, I didn't think he had enough guts left to give you a second round at him. Ha, Ha, Ha, looks like that bullet had quite a bit left once it got to 500 yards. **** coyotes. Kill them all!! Great job!

I understand your use now.

I can't say I have the experience to make a recommendation with such a short barrel to reach 3200fps. The blast will be impressive. A 300WSM can push a 165 to near your goal, my 243AI can do it with a 105gr, but in both cases that's with 22-24in of barrel. The 243AI could do a 85gr with your barrel length, I'm confident. Problem with the 30cals is once you get to the lighter bullets than 165 to keep your velocity up most of them I have used are of questionable integrity for penetrating deer at high velocities.

And frankly, there is no such thing as a point-and-shoot gun to 400 yards. Even with guns at this speed you're looking at about a foot of drop between 300 and 400 yards. I'll admit my range estimation that far out is not accurate enough to take shots without a rangefinder. The only animal I've missed in recent memory I was pretty confident it was 325yds, but it proved to be cocky, and I shot under him. He was a good 375-400. I guess if you decide to aim for spine beyond a certain range estimation, but still...after that last miss I just keep the rangefinder handy or pass.

There's a lot of truth here but there's also another very simple solution.

Since he's hunting from a stand it is very easy to range a number of landmarks and keep those ranges written down on a range card or to even mark them with tape or flags.

That way when time is of the essence there's no problem out to any range which is already marked/recorded.

Exactly right.

I think a .270 WSM with the 100 or 110gn AccuBond is the flame thrower you're needing! LOL. They get roughly 3750fps with a 26" barrel, so knock off 400fps (8" @ 50fps ea) and you've reached your goal, I think. You may have to wear a welding shield though :) and ear plugs w/ muff's. JohnnyK.

Agreed! As noted in my #38 post, I rely heavily on my range finder and constantly range reference objects regardless if I am hunting on a stand or not esp. when I am bowhunting.

Come on now, the 26 Nosler is advertised for just this. Flat to 415...gives him a 15 yard buffer.:D Load that puppy up with some copper 100 grain projectiles at near 3,900 fps and you have a friggin laser. Woh-woh! If he were at 9,000 asl it may get closer to 500.
Getting that from a 18" barrel, now that's gonna be a chore. Maybe get a desert tech or other bullpup design like Shawn's LRKM.
Am I being silly? Maybe, maybe not.

Better get load development done quickly though, as barrel life might be around 600-800. In a hunting rifle, that might still be a lifetime if you don't go out and practice a lot with it. I just can't seem to do that tthough. I have to shoot a few hundred rounds a year from my hunting rifles.

I don't see enough gain anywhere in doing this, sorry; I would go with a shortened 7mm up to a 30-06 and be done with it. I might not even shorten up the barrel, just make the blind bigger so there is no movement restrictions on anyone; This sounds even better to me!!

With the right bullet/velocity lots of calibers will work. Just sight in about 3.5" high at 100 yds and then at most you hold slightly high at 400yds.

A 6.5 Creedmoor with a 100 gr Nosler BT will hit 3250 fps out of a 20" using RL17 and with a Suppressor I would not be surprised if it hit 3300 fps.
If you use HBN coating you could bring it to 3290 fps and with Suppressor over 3300 easy.
If you decide to just use a 26" barrel and no Suppressor it could be 3500 fps.
That's .73 high 50 , 2.44 high 100 , 3.31 high 150 , 3.25 high 200 , 2.18 high 250 , 0 300 , - 3.4 350 , - 8.14 400.

Or go with a Berger Hunt VLD at 3135 fps out of a 26" and it is about the same to 400 with 300 zero but it will take you much further if you want.

Don't see enough gain in what? Load development? Or shooting hundreds of rounds a year? I had over 2600 rounds of centerfire rifle rounds downrange in 2017. From various shooting positions out to 2000+ yards. Made my sitting position w. bipod @ 662 yard shot for my elk seem like a chip shot. Well worth it in my opinion.
