308 win still worth having

Out of over 20 remaining rifles, sold a lot over the last three years, I still have 4 308s. From a custom 700 at 18" to a Jarrett Rifle at 24". One of them, an original MkV TRR, is being rebarreled with a proof carbon at 20" in, wait for it… 308.
there's nothing wrong with a 308. It didn't stop killing effectively because of new cartridges.

Hello all like the title says is the 308 win still worth having for long range hunting I my self do not hear anyone using one any more.i have two as of right now one with 20 inch barrel and one with 24 inch barrel.ive been kicking the idea a round of rebarreling one to 6.5x47 but just can't seem to talk my self into it yet.but anyways with all the calibers out now adays and all the different bullets with high bc and all there's not alot of talk about 308 anymore.but for some reason I just keep on loving that old caliber for some reason I guess mostly to it being the first caliber I reloaded for and the first rifle I ever bought new was chamber in it as well and I've hunted and taken alot of deer with it as well..if any of yall are still a firm believer in the 308 and still hunt long range with it.what are some of yalls rifle set ups and what is your longest shots harvesting an animal? And maybe what your load was...I'm really thanking about building a semi custom out of my remington 700 with a 22 or 26 inch barrel but I'm not sure what the optimal barrel length is on 308 for bullets from 152s to 185s so any info on that would be appreciated as well.thanks in advance

If it still shoots well, It would be a crime to mess with it.... You will hate yourself in the morning. It does so many things really well, the new stuff are more specialty in general. Do you really Hunt over a 1/4 mile?

I never was a .308 Win. guy but a couple presidents ago I felt I needed an Ar-10 just to show that a person could hunt with a modern sporting rifle. Took my doe antelope that fall with it, 165 yards and it dropped in its tracks. Then last year an old school Ruger 77 RFI carbine in .308 Win. found its way to my safe. Once again my doe antelope tag was filled by the old .308 Win.. I love the light weight quick handling little carbine, elk is next on its menu. Glad I found this old caliber after all there's years, it's a keeper.

What we really need is something built on like the 6.5 creedmoor or 260 rem case, necked up to use the pressure more efficiently to a popular caliber with lots of great bullets, perhaps a little more capacity but still fit a short action. I know it sounds crazy but with today's powders and bullets, I bet it could do everything that the 30-06 did to earn its legendary status decades ago.

Perhaps you are right...and... maybe call it a 308!!
Necked up 260 case, works with today's faster burn rate powders, great selection of bullets and fits in short action!
AND!!... It is and has always been a callus on the heel of the 30-06!

I've found myself going back to the 308 recently. I still like my 6.5 better, but I still enjoy shooting the 308.

Most of my hunting experience over the last 35 years is with a 308. I've tried on deer and hogs 223, 243, 25-06, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 CM, and 7mag. When the dust settled I still own the 223(prairie dogs), 300 Hamr, 308, and 7 mag. The Hamr for all intense and purpose is a short barreled 308. I had one of those too and did most of my deer hunting with it! My only regret is that the 25WSSM didn't catch on. The only thing that killed deer like a 25-06, 25 WSSM is the short equivalent, was the 7 mag but you risk a lot of meat with that. Now I have a 24" 308. I sometimes wonder why I still have a 7 Mag, a 24"-26" 308 I believe is that good! But I try to limit myself to 350 yards.

I got my first 308 52 years ago, I was 14. A 742 Remington. I still have a few. All the hype about the new calibers . I reload and shoot weekly. I get amused at the range. 250 yards is easy. After that, the game changes. My favorite now is is a 7-08, 120gr bullets. Light recoil. Just MO.

I thought the popcorn idea might take off.
The point of my devils advocate question is that if the creeds are so good seems like LE and the military would be all over them. As far as I know they don't use them, so the 308, and 223/556 must still be pretty good!
I get wanting to play with different stuff like the creeds and wildcats,been there done that, but in my older age, I am coming back to the simple. proven stuff and enjoying it.
