Hey guys, do any of you know of a hunting load that shoots well in lots of rifles in .308, similar to like a Federal gold medal match?

I have a Winchester model 88 passed down from my dad that I would like to load some rounds for, but I don't have the time or components to spend working up a load.

I currently have Some IMR4064, H4350, and H4831SC on hand as well as a bunch of 208g AMAXs and some other stuff.

IMR4064 is said to work well in the .308. I tend to end up with Varget.

Do you have any lighter .30 cal bullets? A 208 grain is on the heavy end for the .308.

The IMR 4064 is your ticket for sure.... 208's aren't going to work with your magazine restrictions of the 88.
I would look for some 168gr Berger Classic as they should be perfect for that rifle.

The Winchester eighty eightis a fine rifle. But it has a weak grip area simply because of its design be careful shooting anything "heavy ", if it were my rifle it would not shoot anything heavier than 150 grain bullet And at that it makes a fine deer rifle for the typical hunter

Varget for sure, but I'm hoping to use this 4064 mainly because my 30-06 doesn't really like it. It really likes the H4350.
43.0-43.3 VARGET, 210m, 175-178 grain bullets in a Lapua case. If your rifle doesn't like that load, it's got a problem.
Also, 43.5 4064 under a 168 grain.
Hey Michael. Thanks for the loads. 👍🏽 I'm all over that 4064 load.

I'll keep my eye out for some 168-178 class bullets.

Thanks for the responses guys.

it was my dad's favorite. He had a few inexpensive rifles. If we both drew a tag we hunted with the 30-06 so we could share ammo. His was a Springfield 03-A3 and mine a Rem 700. But if he was hunting solo he always carried this 88.

My sister has 2 boys. I'm hoping to pass the 88 to one and the 03-A3 to the other soon.

Lake City brass 42gr rl15 168amax or eldm.. can bump it up to 44gr in 308 brass...never seen a 308 that wouldn't shoot that load and it's great on deer. I've lost count of the number of deer Ive taken with that load.

Yup that IMR 4064 43.5gr for a 168gr SMK, FED 210 is a proven load. I've used it in my PSS on and off for decades. But fair warning I loaded some up last week and it showed pressure signs with a velocity of 2831 fps. Since your Winchester 88 has sentimental value I'd work up from 41.4gr IMR 4064, that was an old Sierra accuracy load. H4895 makes some accurate loads with the 168gr-175gr SMK too. As does TAC and RL15.

I'm in the VARGET camp. My load seems to work in every 308 I try it in with awesome accuracy. Here it is if you like the lighter 150g bullets for deer.

Winchester or Remington brass (I've used both but Winchester lately)
Winchester LR primer
Varget 46.5g
Bullet Sierra 150g BT Gameking
OAL 2.802"

I'm sorry it is not one of the powders on your list. As always start a little lower and work up. This load is a little less than max charge listed on the Hodgdon online reloading data.
