.308 data

It's only 1 picture, and I can still see it on my end...Try refreshing your page or something? I know Photobucket has been acting up lately, that could be the issue?

Mudrunner are you haveing to play with seating depth on the 210s I tried the 168 hybrids and had to load @ 2.90 to get them to group in my Surgeon Scapel.

The 210's are a "press-fit" depth, if you catch my drift. LOL They're sitting up against the lands and I have to put some pressure to lock the bolt handle down. But they are stacking quite nicely with 39.1gr of Varget.

I did that exact comparison except with 168gr SMKs. The best load that I came up with is 41.1grain Alliant AR-Comp with Fed 210M primers and lapua brass. 0.080" to 0.012" off the lands. The results were
MAX FPS=2710.
MIN=2688.
AVE 2698 FPS.
ES 22FPS.
STDEV 7FPS.
2 10shot groups were .5" or so at 100yds

Fed Prem Gold 168 SMK
MAX 2677 FPS
MIN 2621 FPS
AVE 2651 FPS
ES 56 FPS
STDEV 16 FPS
2 10shot groups were 0.6" or so at 100yds

Cost is $.60 assuming I can reload lapua 10 times and $1.65 for factory Feds assuming you can find any.

So basically no difference between the 2 as far as grouping with my load doing better as far as speed. But I'm not popping the champagne just yet. Next I'm going to try 3 10 shot groups at 200yds where I'm pretty sure there will be a bigger difference. After that the same tests on 175 SMKs.

I have replicated Federal 175 Match using 43.1gr Reloader 15 , Federal or Win brass, fed 210 M or Win LR primers. Loaded COAL 2.810". My old Sierra Reloading manual states that this load duplicates the match load. Its right on the nose .My velocity is the same at 2575FPS. My reloads have an SD of 7 vs factory of 15. Both produce .25-.5 MOA at 300 yards. Same scope settings. My rifle is a Rem700 Milspec 5R.

I have a late 90's manufacture Remington 700 VS. Like the OP's rifle, mine showed a distinct preference for the Sierra 175's.

I concur with Varget being the powder of choice. At the moment, however, Varget is pretty hard to obtain. You may have to develop some loads with alternative powders that you are able to obtain. A good loading manual would be very useful here.

I recently developed a load using RL-17 and 185g Berger Hybrids that outperformed anything else I have fired in my rifle. I used what I could find and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

One of the great virtues of the .308 is that it is capable of performing wonderfully with a broad range of components. In the current climate, that is a very BIG advantage.

Good articles on .308 ammo:

The Rifleman's Journal: Cartridges: 7.62 NATO Long Range Match Cartridges - Part 1

Some of the USA military rifle teams handloaded new Federal cases with 210M primers with about 44 grains of IMR4064 under Sierra 168's. They won a lot of matches and set some records with that load. It easily shot under 2/3 MOA at 600 yards in semiauto M14NM's. Federal GMM ammo with IMR4064 was equally as accurate. But only with new cases. Reloaded fired cases from M14's never shot as accurate regardless of how they were resized.

I've shot that same load in 7.62 NATO Garands as well as bolt action match rifles. It is indeed very accurate.

Federal loaded both IMR3031 and IMR4064 in that ammo and may have used a REloader powder, too. Best accuracy seemed to be with IMR4064 as IMR3031 dirtied up the barrels a lot more.

Never reloaded in my life. I am looking for advice on a brand of power and primer that will be close to federal gold metal match ammo. I shoot 175 grain in my. 308 and this factory ammo will produce a 5 shot group that can be covered with a dime. Thanks.
I believe the answer to your question is ,Fed. GMM Ammo used IMR-4064 in the load you are refering to. There are other powders that can be used if your rifle doesen't like IMR-4064. I have had good results with H-4895 & Win. 748 in a Rem. 700 Varmit 24" Barrel. A .308 is one of the easiest cartridges there is to load for. With that being said, you will have to determine what powder & bullet combination works best for you. Always consult a loading manual before loading any bullet and make sure you are looking at the data for THAT particular bullet. A boat tail bullet & a flat base bullet are not the same even though the weigh the same. Flat base bullets have a longer bearing surface and may create higher pressures than a boat tail of the same weight. Happy loading and shooting to you. ..... SEMPER FI!

I have reloading manuals from Sierra, Berger, and Hornady. All three manuals contain a lot of good instructional information, from basic to advanced. Of the three, I would recommend getting the Sierra manual first.
