308 anyone?

I have a .308 Savage 99 C that I'm re-fitting with a custom laminated stock and a custom hexagonal barrel.

I've been very tempted to re-chamber in 6.5 CM but I already have a competition Ruger Precision Rifle and a new Browning X-Bolt Pro in 6.5 CM so I'll leave it in .308. Besides I have dies for .308 so I can reload for it. It made a very good Pennsylvania deer rifle in another life and soon it will be a beautiful custom rifle.

Even though I have a 300 that will do 1,000fps faster than a 308 with the same weight bullet I will always have a spot in my safe for one.

Just the nature of this forum is all. Snipers hide being a more PRS driven forum you'll see plenty on 308 and 308 based chambering. Here you see just about all chambering a being used. Long Range only you see more talks on the big magnums.

ONE THOUSAND FPS.......

Echo ( there are lots of calibers that are supirior ballistics to the .308) however , .308 will get it done . Choose your bullet , get the minimum valocity for proper bullet expansion from bullet manufacturer then create a ballistic chart . Use those guidelines of the chart to find minimum valocity to find your max range to shoot big game ( or you max you feel comfortable shooting ) . I like to keep foot pounds of energy minimum to 1000-1500 on Deer and 2000 on elk . I like to check that info to create a max to shoot for the given combination of gun, bullet & valocity. I take my kimber mountain accent .308 in the woods walking for Deer and elk as it's the lightest gun I could find . In big open country for elk I'll take a magnum .30 cal

Does anyone still hunt with a 308? With all the new cartridges and choices out there does anyone still hunt with a 308? Seems like questions arise about new rifles and what to look for and the 308 is seldom mentioned. I would think with the advancements in bullet technology the 308 would gain popularity again. I am thinking of building a simple 18" suppressed hunting rig in 308 shooting the 165-185 range bullets. Shooting distances would not exceed 300 on game and 500 steel

I love all of my .308's. I have plenty of other options but don't hesitate to take one out hunting. I dialed a friend in last fall in Colorado on a mule deer at 600 with factory ammo. He dropped in his tracks. We have shot hogs up to 330 pounds here and they never move. We have only shot hogs out to 600 but it has been very effective. I have been using the Sierra 175 tmk since last fall. We haven't shot at much distance on the hogs but it is devastating at 150. It looks like it will preform nicely at longer range with less velocity.

I do!

I do! 168 VLDs on Louisiana deer out to 700 yards, no problem. And steel at 1,000 for fun. Savage 116 with a Straight Jacket barrel.

I took my 308 Sako 85S Finnlight to New Zealand with 4-16 Vortex PST shooting Hornady Precision Hunter and took A Tahr ,Chamois,Fallow Deer, Gold Medal Red Stag all free range. The closest shot was 200 yards and I topped that off with a Wallaby at 500 yards.

Well, as far as 308w goes, I have a 6.8 pound "ar-10" ...yes, that is 6.8 pounds with 3-9 leupold optics, just over 7 pounds with 5 rounds of ammo for hunting.
I take it when I'm in tighter "woods" conditions where I want a lightweight rifle with quick follow up shots.
I handload the 178eldx over varget for a speed of 2475fps from the 16" barrel
It shoots consistantly in the 1/2 to 3/4 moa
If you use 1000ft pounds as your minimum I could still use it out to 800 yards (I hunt at 7000-10000msl)
Mpbr is 270 yards so it's intended range is 300 and under, but I would not hesitate to use it much further if I felt comfortable with the shot.

I also bring my 8" suppressor in my pack and use it over open fields ( I dont hike the woods with it on though as it feels too long for me in tight areas)

I was contemplating getting a 300wsm upper for it but the barrel length on those are 22-24" and that makes for a long semi auto rifle. Besides a light weight 308 gas gun is already hard enough to keep the muzzle flip tamed, I cant emagine how a light 300wsm gas gun would be to handle.
Who is building the 300 WSM uppers? I missed buying a SAUM upper and didnt and wish I had.

I have a couple of 308's I hunt with. First one is a 18" barrel I run suppressed at 2830 FPS with a 155 berger hvld. This gun has killed a number of elk, deer, barbary sheep and antelope. Easily comfortable to 500 yards hunting with it, although for elk it is starting to get a little low on energy at that distance, in my opinion. Have shot a cow elk at 530 with it and it worked, but conditions need to be pretty good for me. Getting great results out of the 155 at close and further distances. I also run a 24" 308 with the 168 berger classic hunter at 2780 fps. I have to say that bullet at that starting velocity is absolutely wicked on game animals. Have shot over a dozen deer, a couple elk and a barbary sheep with it and terminal performance has been outstanding. This is my go to hunting rifle for most everything I hunt.

I do own a 6.5 creedmore and have used it to harvest an antelope, but I personally prefer my 308 for hunting. I have used them more and have more confidence in it than my creed. As others have stated, I have larger rifles for other circumstances, but I am really fond of my 308's.
