300 wsm or 6.5 prc

Elk are very tough animals with a heavy hide. My buddy and his son were in Idaho a few years ago elk hunting. His shot his elk at 580yd with 300wsm and 150gr TTSX perfect shot into the lungs and he stood there after the shot. Hit him again then dropped where he stood. IMO a 6.5 round is not a very ethical round for a elk at further shots past 300yd. Stick with the wsm over the prc.

Apples vs Oranges I know, not very similar cartridges but hear me out.

I want to build a decent all around rifle(mostly mule deer and elk every other year) for backpacking and am wanting to keep the weight around 9ish pounds. To me that is a decent weight for shoot-ability and pack-ability.

I have a trued up Remington 700 short action with a magnum bolt face. I picked up a fluted Bartlein #3 chambered in 308 win(only 200 rounds through it) awhile back from a close friend for dirt cheap(shot fine but he decided to go a different caliber).

I was thinking about just having the 308 barrel punched out to 300wsm gunsmith said it should be pretty easy to do but the 6.5 prc has caught my attention as of late.

So what do you guys think I should do, go with the wsm or buy a new barrel and go prc??

I posted this on Rokslide as well but was curious to see what you all had to say.
I would definitely choose 300 wsm with Elk involved
I like to have the extra knock down power whenever possible on larger game.

I would say the 300WSM.Mine is a MRC in a McMillan Game Hunter stock with edge fill.I have a 3-9X40 Conquest on it and all up it is 8 1/4 pounds. That stock handles the recoil very well and is a pleasure to shoot.

Another vote for the 300 WSM.

For easily obtainable lightweight rifles I like the Tikka and they come in 300WSM. Unfortunately, every time I've considered such a rifle I end up with a 338WinMag or 308Win. So I've no more to add.

I'd go for the 300WSM. The ability to load heavier bullets would give it the nod.

Since I have started seeing people with 6.5's using them; I have come to the conclusion we have some really **** poor hunters or the 6.5's that are trendy today are **** poor game getters. I think the latter over the former. so I have but one thing to say on this issue.. punch out the 308 win barrel to 300 WSM. you will not be sorry. I know the one I built my client last year for Elk and Deer has been a faithful game getter for him with Barnes and Berger slugs along with Hornady SST's and Sierra GK's.

Well, I started out with the 300 Weatherby Magnum RP 700 Classic, saved some bucks pick up the Weatherby MK V two years later than came the 30-06 Savage and several more rifles in '06 than the 300 WSM (Tikka T3 Lite) the best one so far followed by 6.5 CM/Grendel cartridges, and who does not have a 223/556 rifle.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone!

I didn't know the prc would have to run a Wyatt's box to work properly. I was under the impression it was built to run out of a short action. I was concerned about the wsm because I wasn't sure I could get the coal long enough to shoot the heavier bullets.

Looks like either way I go I need to end up with a extended box. With that being the case, it looks like the wsm is going to get the nod.

Has anyone ran the 180 elite hunters in the wsm? I would love to run the 215s but even with a Wyatt's it doesn't seem like It will work as a repeater.

You could always throw the Sherman short mag into the mix. Pretty nifty rounds. I'm probably going to convert my 300wsm to a 6.5ss or 270ss in the next year or so. They fit in a standard short action and still get good speed.

baskhunter,

Like they say " bring enough bullet" you can never go wrong with that concept.
