A round stone followed by emery or just emery.

The brass doesn't look that bad to me. I see no reason not to reuse it. Other comments

Throw away the nickle plated though.

Glad I could be of help in finding the problem. I have been through those sharp edges and torn brass many times as a police armor working on semi pistols.
