I'm looking into building a 300 WSM on my Zermatt Origin short action. I've got a manners MCS-EH1 with the Hawkins Hunter bottom metal, and looking at the compatibility chart on Hawkins website it says that you need the medium action magnum magazine for a 300 WSM. I called Hawkins and asked them about this, and they said that the reason that they don't list the 300 WSM in the short action magnum magazine is because of feeding issues. My question to those on this forum is if anyone is using a similar setup to mine and running the short action magnum hunter magazine in 300 WSM, and if so what is your experience? I know that a lot of guys like to use a medium or long action for this cartridge so that they can run the heavier bullets and seat them out farther, but I want this as a hunting rifle and don't plan on shooting anything over a 185 grain bullet, so the roughly 2.90 COAL max is fine by me.

I have a 300 wsm and fought some issues. Mainly hate the two down one in the pipe in my current setup.

Hawkins are great people and I see lots of customs being built with them. I finally broke down and ordered their bottom metal and two clips. I was not blown away with the product at the price of it and I thought it wasn't too refined or seemed clunky for my taste. I fooled around with one mag and had it feeding well but we made some mods to the front for my COAL but it just didn't solve my issues (I have lots). I returned the as new bottom metal and the unmolested clip and ate the other one.

Great folks there and they were sorry it didn't work out for me.

Don't build on a short action.
