300 Sherman Shortmag (SS)

Congrats brother! That is an awesome animal and an awesome shot. That rifle is pretty sweet too!

Dangit, Rich. I thought the 7mm SS was the unicorn. Now you got this one out and Im gonna have to get another barrel so I can play too!!

3010' with a 215 is nuts. Im getting 2900 with the 195 eol. I might out run ya in the long run but hunting with a 215 at 3000' and outperforming the 7mm unless out to extreme yardages due to BC is crazy good. I mean sure, I can run a hot load like it takes to get that 300 up to 3000 and probably get 2980-3000 with some decent primer cratering, but forget it. Ill just build a new gun now >:D

Good idea!

I was ecstatic as this was my furthest kill to date!!! The one shot with the 215 Berger was perfectly behind the shoulder and had a racket ball sized exit at 1110 YARDS!!!

Dang man, don't work your way out or anything, just throw down a 1000+ gun) That is a potent rig you have put together there and your driving it rather well :D

Thanks guys!!! It was incredible! I feel like this rifle drives itself! I can say that I am super impressed with the Swaro X5 I put on it which is terrible cause there I no way I can afford anymore of those :)

A great write up with a new case, powder bullet combo 2970fps with a case that small will make alot of guys take note well done. I wonder what it would do in a 22-24 inch barrel the perfect woods rifle?

I've got a 23'' 7mm SS and am losing very little in this barrel to everyone else's 26'' sticks, like 20-40' I think =) This little round is impressively efficient.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, I am new here and do not want to step on any toes or seem ungrateful for all of the effort put into this project. I thought I may have missed something so I have re-read the entire thread to see if this would work for my application. Perhaps I have misunderstood but it sounds like this is being testing in a Tikka T3 short action extended to a long action with a COAL of 3.01". Maybe I have missed something but this doesn't sound like it will fit in a Short action magazine like the other SS cartridges. I am not seeing the advantage of this particular SS over a 300wsm is it needs to be fed from a long action, long magazine. This seems to be the new direction many people are trying with the T3 and long magazines (seating the wsm long). I have greatly enjoyed following the adventure nonetheless but please let me know if I have it wrong. And thank you for trying to push cartridge design forward!

It is 3.015" (I think) to the lands with a 215? That is with no jump and I am not sure where Ryan is shooting it. With most other bullets that are suitable, it would be under 3" to the lands. Ryan will have to chime in for exact measurements as I am away from home (and my data)...........Rich

Sorry for such a late response (dang kids and their love to share sickness). I finally was able to do some measuring on a few bullets for COAL. If using a Rem 700 you can get a 3" magazine for short action (there is a 3.1" out there but havent heard of anyone getting hold of it yet) and on the Tikka t3 you can use the long action magazine and get 3.36-3.38" since the Tikka actions are all the same size.

Back to the measurements...

215 Berger 3.034
208 ELD-M 2.994
200 ELD-X 2.897
190 Berger 2.914
180 Scirocco 2.904
212 ELD-X 2.965

In regards to the 215 berger I have not ran them any shorter. It just so happened the first depth I tried worked so I never tried anything else. From what I hear they are very insensitive to seating depth so I'd bet they would shoot just as well seated under the 3" COAL.

Should have some more measurements in the next couple days once the 225 ELD-M show up :)
