.300 Norma or .300 RUM (can’t decide!!!) What

Pretty sure the HCM originated here in Melbourne, Australia my home town. I do like it but I would prefer to stick to something with readily available brass, also want to use a proof carbon wrap and I don't think the HCM is going to be too friendly as the case will stick further out then the shank and onto the area 'wrapped' in carbon. May be unsafe as it's really only an s/s sleeve under the carbon

In the 338 Norma, I put one together with a Stiller CIP length DBM, and I'm putting together a light weight one with an aluminum BDL bottom metal. It may only hold 2+1, hoping for 3+1, but I haven't had to shoot that many times at anything in years. I would base my decision on if I wanted a lighter or heavier rifle. The one with the dbm is a 11.8 lb rifle scoped and loaded. The bdl is going to end up 8.5-9.0 lbs depending on what scope I go with.

Haven't shot the 300 norma, but in the 338 I got best velocity with Retumbo (didnt try N570) but ridiculous consistency with H1000, and only gave up roughly 50 fps or so. From 84-89 grains, one shot at each grain, all shots were touching in about a 1" ctc group that ranged over 180+ fps.

What manufacturer of floor plate? I prefer floor plates anyway as I carry my rifles a fair bit and aim to keep weight down in my builds.

I'm just using PTG machined aluminum bottom metal. There are nicer ones, I am just on a tight budget.

I'm wanting to build a new rifle for the upcoming 230 & 250 A-TIPs and can't decide on a cartridge to push them.

Narrowed it down to these two cases predominantly for case capacity and brass availability.

I'm not ruling out another cartridge if someone can highlight one I should also be looking at.

I like the RUM as i can use just a magnum bolt face and not a lapua unit. Also Mcmillan will do a carbon for a RUM and not a Norma action.
Not too fussed about the single feeding issue with the RUM. What advantages does the Norma have over this case besides mag feeding?

Stick with the Rum, the Norma is cool but the Rum makes a whole lot more sense for the vast majority of people.

Until you get to shooting beyond about 1,200yds the difference between the Rum, Norma, Lapua and the other big case 30's is really negligible.

I've hunted much of the world with the .260 Rem, .300wm, and .375 Ruger. I've killed box car loads of game, varmints, and predators with the 7mm STW, and .300 Rum.

I have yet to find myself undergunned in any way.

Thanks Wild Rose. Going to go with the Norma, if I ever want to go .338 I can with the lap bolt face. Main reason I'm doing this plus I may have less issues with bullet seating lengths. This gun is going to be a dedicated 1000+ meter hunting rifle as I have a heap of other rifles capable of doing anything below this. I feel as if the Norma is better suited to the longer Bullets which this rifle will only shoot. Nothing wrong with the cals you mentioned however, loved all my Win Mags.

Wow didn't realize the rum had such a following! It never even crossed my mind due to the length of the cartridge. Figured you'd be fighting the 215's and 230's to feed from a mag. Trying to plan my next build and it's going be a moose hunting rifle. Was leaning towards 300. Win mag as I had one for years, shot comp with one, and know I can get the 215's going 2900+ mag fed

My win mag shoots 210's at 2990 fairly comfortably using H1000. It's a good option just want to go a bit bigger. If your building a new rig consider a little more HP as the new larger offerings are going to be something special. Look at the RUM or 300PRC if you don't want to go lapua bolt face. Since posting this thread I looked into the 300 PRC a little More and it spiked my interest also. Doesn't match the RUM for case capacity but it has its advantages, especially if you may run factory ammunition.

I have the C.A. Ridgeline in a RUM. And to keep it box feed i'm using 212eldx an 90g h-1000. Groups nice. But always itching to try bigger longer just be annoying single feed.

300 prc is a great option for factory ammo

Have you given any thought to a 30-338 lapua improved? It should easily do what you're wanting.

Hey guys, does anyone run 1.2" shanks on their lap/Norma builds and if so have you encountered any issues with this ?

I'd prefer a 1.250" or larger but I've talked to a few Smith's that said 1.2" is fine.

I have 2 shooting buddies that have proof research 300 Norma Tac II rifles 1.2" 26" carbon barrels. No issues running 230 Berger's at 3025' in one of them with Lapua brass.

that's actually what i'm looking for, 230's @ 3025-3050 fps. ill run a 28" so mite gain a touch more speed then your friends unit.
