.300 Norma magnum for hunting??

I need some help guys. What am I doing wrong? How is everyone getting 2950-3000fps from a 26" barrel? Is using CIP length mags so the shooter can seat the bullet out further the secret? I was running a 28" barrel rig with standard saami length 338LM mags and struggled to get 2900fps with the 230's. If I pushed the powder charge too far my brass would only go 2-3 firings before the primer pockets were too loose and I had to toss them. Are you guys building these on Lapua length actions?

What powder were you using ?

Can I use a fl sizer on 338 nm brass to form 300 norma brass? Everywhere I looked online was either sold out of 300 norma or the 338 was cheaper. Cant I simply neck it down? I already ordered the 338n brass. So I hope I can haha

You may want to double check this before you get too crazy. I am pretty sure that the 300 has a slightly longer headspace (maybe .020") so that it won't chamber in a .338.

It may still work, by making a "false shoulder" on the neck but you will be fire forming then. I'm not sure if going from .338 to .308 is a big enough difference to ensure you get enough shoulder to headspace against?

Maybe someone else would know? I'm curious.

I had good luck with 86 grains of H1000 while fire forming with a 210 VLD. It would be pretty close to max for a standard 300 Norma though.

Well long story short I got my brass and ran it through the fl sizer and it was smooth as butter. There is a slight mark around the shoulder but I figured that would happen. Now lets see if they chamber..

I'm going to give the 300NM another go, this time with a CIP length action/DBM. Parts are inbound. Specs:

McM camo Sentinel stock
Surgeon XL
Bartlein 27" MTU 1-9
Badger FTE brake
All metal finished in patriot brown

I'm looking to keep everything under 10lbs :D

10lbs aint gonna happen with a MTU contour. The barreled action will weigh close to that. A Bartlein MTU at 26" is 7.0 lbs. A Surgeon XL action will weigh probably all of 3lbs with bottom metal/mag. My guess is that gun with a Nightforce will weigh 15 to 16lbs without knowing the weight of the stock and it could be more with a heavy stock.

I have a 6.5-300wm with a 28" spiral fluted Sendero contour on a Remington action with a Nightforce in a HS stock that weighs 13lbs 10oz ready to hunt with a bipod or just over 12lbs without a bipod. A spiral fluted Sendero contour even at 28" will weigh under 4.5lbs. So you can add at least 2.5lbs to those numbers just from the barrel.

I was kidding.
