hi i am looking to buy a gun, most likely a weatherby mark V for long range elk hunting. i have read good things about the 378 weatherby cartridges, but i am open to other suggestions in the same class as those calibers.

I've had a couple of .338-378 shooters advise me to go with the .338 Laupa if I do a LR rig. Just some food for thought.

The 338/378 is the most powerful factory 338 available and is very good with the 300gr SMKs

Brass and loaded ammo is expensive but no more than a lot of the wildcats.

The 338 lapua has a good reputation for accuracy but so does the 338 RUM which is its ballistic
equal and brass is easy to find.

The only way to get more velocity than the 338/378 Weatherby is to go with one of the bigger
wildcats like the 338 AM.

The 338/378 has 2000ft/lbs of energy at 1000 yards and 1000 ft/lbs at one land mile with
reasonable loads (2800 to 2900 ft/sec with the 300gr SMK.

That should take care of any Elk.

A 200gr bullet will exceed 3500ft/sec for about the same energy at 1500 yrds.

I like the 250gr accubond for Elk because it is good to 1200 yrds for Elk with 1500ft/lbs of
energy.

Some say that the big 338/378 tend to be a little finicky when loading for it compaired to the
30/378 .

thanks for the input guys, as of right now if i was going weatherby 378 i think id go with the 30 cal, how do the ballistics compare to a 338 laupa or RUM?

Some people claim the Weatherby freebore isn't conducive to accuracy. I know you won't be shooting any elk past 1k with a factory Weatherby, and you have to be a special shooter to be able to do that even with a ultra accurate custom rig.

However, I will be shooting my factory Mark V 300 Wby to 1k+ soon and will post how it goes.

I have everything you have discussed and I get the same speed out of the 338 Lapua Improved as I do with the 338/378 and the same holds true for the 30/338 Lapua Improved as compared to the 30/378. FWIW, when my two Weatherby barrels peter out, they will be replaced with the 338 Lapua Improved versions. The Weatherby cases are just way too expensive for what you get in quality. I am sitting on about 2000 Lapua cases due to deciding to use the Lapua Improved versions of the big .338s and .30s over the Weatherby offerings....

As far as accuracy is concerned they all exhibit basically the same accuracy levels..... Do yourself a favor and go with the Lapua cases afterall, if you shop in the right places (Cabelas), the Lapua brass will be cheaper than the Weatherby brass..

You'll get better accuracy with the 30-378 weatherby but much longer throat life with the .338-.378 Weatherby. Buy both!
