30-06 for Long Range

So basically your saying the 338 win mag is so close to the 338 Lapua, why have one ? There not using the 338s/375s at the K2M because they love the extra recoil and punishment. There is a huge difference in the performance between the 308 and 30/378. That's not just my opinion.
The performance difference between a .308 and a .30-378 is big yes, but not between a .300 win and the .30-378.

The differences are not as big as you might think they are ... .
If you would compare it to a .30-378.
Same bullet around 600 feet per second advantage for the .30-378 means it does about the same 200 yards farther ... thats it.
The 308 at 1400 yards does what the 30/378 does at 2000 yards with the same bullet. That's a 230 pushed 2450 in a 308 vs 3100 in the 30/378. Elevation at 4000'.

True. Much closer
It is very close actually, 100 yards difference about, thats it, you wont really notice the difference, but what will radically change is your wallet and the barrel ...,
Thats why people go up in calibre, because increasing charge doesnt get you anywhere.

Maybe yes, i havent done the math very precisely, but it could be closer to 1400 vs 1800, for about 2,5 the powder

I'm only going by a ballistic program. Real world numbers may change but I doubt they'd change much. Either way, the 308 has it's place as does the Big 30s. I think most people know each cartridges limitations. Most just want to use what they have and often times they work in a pinch, just not the most ideal for the job.

I'm probably one of the biggest 30-06 fans out there, but even I come to realize it's limits. I went to 308 mainly because of barrel life when shooting at the range. The 308 does just about everything a 30-06 can do, but most people who are in the know claim 5-6k rounds in a 30-06 factory barrel, and most say you'll never shoot out your 308. Looking down the bore of my 06 I can see its frosty at the throat and it's about 5k. I've lobbed 208 grain elds to 2800 FPS for a long time now. It's hit torso targets at 1500 yards, probably still would. It's been a great rifle to learn on. After years of shooting different cartridges, I've settled on a few that overlaps in components so I can keep feeding them in these expensive times 30-06 is definitely in the stable. When kept in its limits, no one will ever question why you brought a 30-06. After saying all that, i believe the 30-06 case is better suited for the 7mm bullet.

Yes i agree with that

Could you share the specifics of the rifle and load? I have a box of 208 eldm and want to try them out of my Feathweight M70 22" barrel. TIA
I'll look at my data but I do know it was 55 grains of RL17 with a hex boron coated 208 Winchester brass. What I don't remember is my coal it is significantly longer than SAMMI of 3.34" it's 3.5ish" Also my TC venture has a fairly long free bore.
DANGEROUS LOAD!! Hex boron allows me to push it a little harder. Work up!!
I wanted to put that disclaimer in for anyone in the future googling load data.
