Ok. Dumb question, finally to the point I want to try a custom build. I have always liked the 3 position safety on my factory rifles.

So in looking to go custom, is it a function of the action and bolt to go with the safety? Like will only certain actions and trigger combos give me that option?

Thanks

will only certain actions and trigger combos give me that option?
Some manufacturers come that way.
Some you can add it.

It depends on what you are going to start with for a custom.

Example 1: Mauser 98 and Remington 700 action (not a clone) Gentry makes a new back end of the bolt that is 3 *** like you would expect.
Example 2: Weatherby Mark V, AFAIK, can't, safety on the bolt, locks the handle.
Example 3: Savage, some come with a 3 ***, others can get a Jard.
Example 4: Custom/Builder actions on the R700 foot print. Trigger safety may not lock the bolt. May have a bolt release separate from the trigger. So...?

and there are more combinations that I never tried. Sako, I never checked mine. Tikka, it was my buddies so don't know.

Yes, Gentry make quite a few aftermarket 3 position safeties, for REM 700, Mauser'98, and a host of actions that can run a REM 700 style cocking piece.
It must be understood these are NOT drop in parts, they require gunsmithing alterations and fitment.

Cheers.

I called Gentry once, was going to see a friend literally next door. I thought wow how cool. I hope the gentleman was having the worst day of his life and pray everyday since has been better.... I wish he never answered my call.

My LAW Professional model has the Ed Brown 704 action and a 3 position safety. Not sure who has the rights to that action now.

I wish there were more options for 3 position safety, it just seems like a superior design. Many times walking through tight woods I've glanced down to see my 700 pattern bolt dangling in the open position, giving me the sad realization and one of my meticulously hand loaded cartridges was ejected along the way.

Winchester 70 pattern actions are 3 position, which includes kimber rifles. I've owned a few that I liked.
