28n, 7rum, 7stw decisions (7rm falls far behind)

Is this a hunting rifle or a plinking rifle?

I believe you are not a hunter, so maybe step down to the 7RM/PRC. You are only dialing. I rented a hand reamer for my 7RM and created more freebore. Was able to load the 190 LRHT out pretty good. Got 2835 FPS with N570 and 3070 FPS with Pixie26...That will hang with the powder/barrel burning cartridges you mentioned.

But hey I get wanting the big ones. I burned out a 300 RUM barrel shooting at 100 yards the last three years....
Yup, I don't hunt! Might use it for xlr varmint hunting/plinking (ie, pigs).

I had a 7STW for a few years. Barrel.life was just over 600 with FAST 160s.

I have a 28 Nos now. It only comes.out of the safe for elk season. 86 rounds down the barrel. 195s @ 3099fps. I expect about 600 rounds max barrel life. I have loaded for a bunch of these. Running a 180-195 @ 3100-3200, I have seen accurate barrel life range from 400 to 700 rounds. Keep a bullet 3050 or so, and you MIGHT get 800 rounds of accurate barrel life depending on how you shoot it.

I have a buddy who is on barrel #3 on his 7RUM. 195s @ 3200. His barrels last about 400 rounds of accurate life.

If you want 1000+ rounds on a barrel, 7RM or 7PRC, .284 Win.

If you want 1500+, 7SAUM, .280AI, 7SS, Etc.

If you want 2000+, 7-08, 7SWC, 7SAW, etc.

Of those cartridges 28N is going to be by far the best for quality brass availability (I don't consider Nosler or Hornady quality brass by any stretch).

None of them are going to be great for barrel life. You might as well stick with the one with readily available quality brass/dies, etc.

I had a STW, it shot great and was fast. But its a super long bullet. So to answer your specific question... the 28N is appealing. Personally if a 7 is preferred, I like the 7wsm or saum overall..... but I also dont know your exact intentions. Some go crazy trying to get a few more fps, and all that is really needed is better shot placement.

going by 3 choices, which could possible have longer throat life to give you more rounds before replacing the consumable? i know it varies, but would all give within the same amount of rounds?

i like the 28n due to case being shorter when using cip mags (3.850) to seat bullet out further.

the 7rum (to me) has a slight disadvantage over the 7stw as capacity being the culprit (not necessarily a bad thing)

7stw having close to the same case volume as the 28n has me on the possible choice?

those who has shot 1 or more of these cartridges weigh in your experience(s).

wouldn't all 3 be a "barrel burner" of less than 1k or 800 rounds? i don't want to try and get a 4"+ mag necessarily as action work will be needed(?). just trying to decide on or if i would add another 7 to my only 2 i have so far (7-08rem & 7saum). the 7rm doesn't give much more power than the 7saum is why the inquiry.
If ti was me i would go with the 28 nosler ,i know anything about the 7STW

What I'd end up getting is 300wm or so for a base rifle and get a custom barrel in a different cartridge.

My 300bo was built for 110-150gr. 308win uses 135-180's and wm uses 170-230's. All weight decisions based on barrel lengths. Having a 28" 7saum gets the Berger 197's over 2,800 and close to 2,900 fps. The 7-08 and 7saum are both AR's. Trying to build more ba's. With proof, straightjacket and a few others offering mrad's gives it more flexibility.

300wm 30" 9t barrel is for 210-230grs
26" 10t for 180-210
24" 9.25t for 170-210

Issues with the mrad is barrel length offerings.

If there's only a 100fps gain i don't feel it's worth the minum difference. I don't hunt, just build and shoot for fun.
I have a 30 nosler with a 26" Bartlein steel 11-1/4 T shooting 210 bergers at 3004 FPS. Useing retumbo 84 gns . And a 28 nosler with a23" barrel shooting the 195 Berger ELO at 2956. In a 8T USEING N570 THE NOSLERS ARE HUILD ON THE OLD 30-06 case but fatter

28 Nosler for components, but don't expect it to be a target rifle.
I shoot my 28 out a 1K yds and it's pretty accurate 1" groups at 500yds 440 yds on coyotes 8" gong at 500 yds hitting a 3/4" hole I think that's pretty good

7 rum if you got the tube, but it's a fair criticism that it's tough stuff the fun bullets in it and still stuff a few down.

The 7 stw is a long one, can't imagine what the looong modern bullets would do other than make single shot.

Before the the wuflu I bumbled on to a prefit 28 nosler for a bargain about the same time as a couple outfits blew out factory dusty 28 nosler ammo for. Was looking to trade down a bit on my short flame thrower 7 rum. Only had it for a few hundred rounds but could never get book loads to match nosler factory ammo speeds. Passed it off to a friend to play with and he shot it the rest out. Don't think it was a full 800 and done, although closer to a prs shooting pace.

Couple observations.... first is man I wish powder was still 2019 prices it's near 3x in 5 years for the fum powders. Second is, I'm lousy with shot string hygiene... but 1000 from a rum is a pipe dream for me. Maybe from the nosler with a better barrel steel.... maybe.

And it will shoot 200gr bullets at 3110 just the same.
