Why do you say 1-8 but you guys have changed your recommended twist on the 195 to 1-9 ?

Go to Bergers website, to the twist calculator, select the 195 Berger. Minimum twist for sea level in cooler temps @ 2950 fps is 1:8.25. Proof used to make a 1:8.24 but seems that they just do 1:8 and 1:8.4, which is what I chose. My elevation will never be below 1500' and temps will rarely be freezing, and if they are, more than likely I'll be at elevation. 28 nosler @ 3100fps will help.

Berger NOW has changed their recommended minimum twist on the 195 EOL to 1:9". With that nei g said, I would still go 1:8" personally. I have shot 17 different 28 Noslers now. One had a 1:9", two had 1:8.5" and the rest 1:8". All the 1:8.5" and faster shoot the 195 extremely well. The one with a 1:9" chose to shoot the 184 F-Open Hybrid. And it is a laser beam.
Finally got me a box of 195's and ran the twist calculator at several velocities, temps and altitude, I shoot in with my 28 Nosler 1:9 and I'm stable! Now for the "real world" testing to begin.

I am just begining the process of purchasing/building a 28 Nosler. I am not certain whether I should go with 1:8, 1:8.5 or 1:9 twist. I am a fan for heavy for caliber bullets and I see using 160-180 gr bullets mostly for hunting. Thoughts from those that have more experience with this cartridge.

1-8" would be best for a hunting rifle.

I've got a new question. If I go 1:8, how light ofva bullet can i still use effectively? I've got lots of 160 accubonds and my 1:9 shoots them light out. It's just doesn't stabilize anything over 175 consistently.
Personally I dont like spinning a bullet no faster than necessary to stabilize it. I believe it put undo stress on the jacket, I've heard guys badmouth Berger bullets blowing up on animals and I've shot alot of animals both deer and elk with them and I have not had one failure. I just wonder if these guys that claim they blow up aren't running real fast twist makes me wonder. I hear guys who want to spin small 20 and 17 cals that shoot sage rats real fast because they get bigger splat factor. I'm also wondering if that isnt why Berger backed off on there twist rates.

ThatTh why I asked that. If 1:8 would be ok for 160 through 195, I could rebarrell. Otherwise, I'll build another 28 for 180's and up.

I was wondering the same. How lite of a bullet can you shoot out of a 1:8?

If the bullet is well constructed you should be able to shoot as you please.

Ordering a 1/8 28 nosler barrel. My one .284 bad experience was with a 280ai in 1/9. It shoots 150s great but I really wanted to shoot 168s and it cant shoot them at all

what I am going to do...for what its worth....is 28"Hart #5 1:8 twist, plan on shooting 143 hammer hunters and also have the 195 bergers set up....
just want to see which one will shoot best and go from there, may also look at the 175 accubond LRs!!!
also really looking at a 7-300norma....over the 28nosler due to the issues ppl have complained about with throat erosion issues with it....

I built one with a 1:9 CA barrel and another with a #5 brux 1:8. Both loved the 162s, 175eh and 180 hyb. Haven't tried the 195s in the CA.
