Thinking of another new rifle build. Have all calibers built 25, 28,30 calibers. But nothing in the .277 cal. Wanting to build something in the 27 caliber using the 170 vld's
1. will be built with a 22-23" barrel length
2. wildcat cartridge is not an issue, due to i reload as well
3. Open to suggestions on others ideas for .277
4. Or if someone is using with 170 vld
and would share their build with us on details on what they did build, and velocity
5. overall thoughts of the 170's
6 Thank y'all in advance, would just like to see others ideas on what options some are using

Howdy I have been thinking about a
7PRC necked down to 277. I think it would make a great 270 pushing the 170.
Have Fun with whatever you decided. 👍
EDIT: I did build a 7RUM necked down to a 277 this past year, it is a screamer but a 22 to 24" build may not be a good idea. Mine has 28" 8twt.
N-570 max load 3434fps.
Retumbo 3393fps.
H-1000 3362fps
4 leaf clover at 200yds 5 shots.

I run 170 Elite Hunters in my 6.8 Western. 3065 FPS with N570 and 3025 with Retumbo and no pressure signs.

I'm switching to ADG brass as we speak, but don't have finished loads for the 170 yet. Hopefully I can get similar velocities with improved accuracy over the Winchester brass I've been using.

I'm still loving my 27 Sherman mag.

Have put together three .270 Sherman's (based off standard .270 win), and all performed about the same. A 25.5" was running the 170 at 2930 with H1000. Same gun runs the 140 Badlands at 3240 fps with N565. More velocity was possible with both, but at the expense of accuracy, so useless velocity. A 19" version runs the 140 Badlands at 3030 with rl26. Never tested it, but the 170 would probably be around 2750-2800 with same powder. Take away 50ish fps for H1000. Figure 30ish fps per inch of barrel length. These are realistic expectations from this cartridge that won't kill brass in 3-4 fireings.

If you want more, the 270 WSM built on a medium length action and throated properly would be great. If you want more than that, the 27 nosler is the easy button without fireforming brass or getting custom dies and better availability. Will be in the same arena as the 27 sherman mag. If you want less than any of these, a 27/284 would be a neat little wildcat with lapua brass available.

As far as the 170's, copy and paste how pretty much any of the other berger's work. They go in a few inches, fragment, and destroy vitals. Don't bet your lunch on an exit, that's not what they were designed to do. Make a good shot, and you won't need an exit. They won't go far. Make a bad shot, and you may or may not have an exit to help with tracking. We have killed pronghorn, mule deer and elk with the 170's from 200 yards to 910. I personally would recommend them for up to mule deer. They killed elk fine with a good shot, but a 30 or 338 cal does it better.

This is very interesting 🤔!!
I think it could be a fantastic mule deer cartridge in a medium action. I know the 6.5x284 is ridiculously easy to tune and get stellar accuracy from, so neck it up .007", jump from a 156 to a 170, and a slight change in powder, and I think it would be a winner. Not really doing anything you can't do with a standard .270 win, but still fun.
