The problem right now is the lack of availability, so it limits the options. I saw a couple of days ago quite a few bullets for 270 at my local Sportsmans, I can let you know what they have, get some if needed and ship them to you.
I really appreciate that, that's very generous of you. I might have to root for the Wildcats today as a payback, but just today! Some of my grandkids live in Corona de Tucson, so I'm down there frequently. I'm not in a big hurry for this, it's more of a project over the next year. We're set up this year for our 34A junior hunt. The problem right now is the lack of availability, so it limits the options. So here's my dilemma, I've got my father's Remington Model 721, chambered in .270 Win, built in 1952. I don't need it for hunting, as I have three other rifles in good calibers that fit all of my hunting needs. I just would like my grandkids to be able to hunt with their great-grandfather's rifle. It's in great shape.
I have worked up a load with Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tip bullets that group about .700, so that's decent for anything that my family would use it for. I'm thinking about trying a different bullet. I like the ELD-X bullet for a good all around performing bullet on medium sized game, but it only comes in 145 grain in the .277 line.
Should I load the 145 ELDX, get the good performance and give up some speed and flatness, or drop down to 130 grain, get the speed back up, maybe with a Berger Classic Hunter? Or just stay with the 140 grain BT? Thoughts?
Coues deer in AZ and cull deer in Texas. Not very big bodies.what game are they hunting this year?
I've got two other rifles if the kids ever draw a rifle elk tag, and I hunt elk archery, so not too much concern with an elk shoulder. More concerned with a close up shot with a smaller bullet in excess of 3000 fps on a deer shoulder bone. I just like more solid bullets in medium weight at slower speeds, especially with the kids shooting. You concerned about a shoulder on elk I assume? Last winter I did some testing with 60 Horn HP out of my 22/250 and it punched right thru the blade on a elk. Same with the 63 Sierra, which is a heck of a bullet.
Shoulders is one of the most parroted things out there, the only part of a elk shoulder that could give one trouble is the knuckle joint and on that I punched right thru it on my first elk 42 years or so ago with my 270 and a 130 Sierra BT.
Honestly, this stuff just isn't rocket science unless we choose to make it so
Side note, buy 5 boxes of Federal Blue Box 130's and call it a day for them, they'll be just fine!
They live off Sahaurita road, and hunt 34 when they can. It's so green right now, and the grass is pretty tall. Will be tough glassing. They both tagged out decent bucks last year, making good shots across a canyon. The junior deer hunt is pretty fun, but a little warm.BEARDOWN!
Let me know and if needed I can get whatever I can find down here.
It's nice down there, right by the Santa Rita Mountains and unit 34A. I've seen some huge coues deer there during Javelina season, but never in October LOL.
If the grass is high and it hasn't cooled much when you come down, watch out for ratlers, don't ask me why LOL.
Good luck on the hunt.
