270 Win vs 6.5 PRC

Howdy friends and neighbors. I am a deer hunter looking to add another Tikka T3x to the stable. I also am a reloader. I am looking at either a .270 win or a 6.5 PRC to hunt over ag fields out to 600 yards. I already have a 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm STW and .30 06 but I like guns.

The .270 WIN Tikka T3x can be had pretty cheap right now. The 6.5 PRC is a little pricey.

What would you choose as a deer round from 0-600 yards?

270 win, some of these https://hammerbullets.com/product/277-cal-145g-shock-hammer/ call it a day. or pick any good hunting bullet, or be like @ButterBean and just find a light bullet (110gr accubond or a the 117gr hammer hunter, or the cavity back bullets, or barnes) and load it to light speed and call it a day.

I'm partial to the 27 cal stuff, lots of good hunting bullets, if yours is a 10 twist still plenty of good hunting projectiles.

Be sure to look at components and make sure you can get them for which ever.

Not to be argumentative, but why 124gr HH? I just love the extra velocity from the 117gr HH and am curious.
The velocity difference between 2 bullets 7 grains apart is minimal while the potential kinetic energy of slightly heavier is always a benefit. The 124 has little better BC at 0.210 vs 0.198 which prob meaningless at 500 yds. If the bullet weight difference was considerably more than I would go with the 117. JMHO

270 wsm!

Nosler's 150gr ablr in 26 (.634) and 27cal (.594) has very little BC difference (advertised) at 600 yards would be minimum with comparable velocities.

I like the ol' 270. Haven't had an issue with cleanly taking game. Pick a good 130gr. bullet and call it a day,(personally I like the Barnes TTSX, but am right now experimenting with the 124gr. Hammers). Can't say anything about the 6.5 PRC, except that it does peak some interest. From what I've research, seems like a decent caliber. Good luck with which ever one you choose.

Here's some 0-600 yard ballistics to compare the two. I chose the 140gr Berger Classic Hunter for the .270 Winchester. It's the highest BC hunting bullet that will work in a 1-10 twist. I set 3050 as the muzzle velocity. For the 6.5 PRC I chose the 156gr Berger EOL at 2900fps. Both loads can be driven harder but this is a middle of the road average for both. On paper both are very close in bullet drop and velocity out to 600. The PRC has less wind drift and more energy on target. Again both are good cartridges, the PRC is just better at longer ranges.

I agree with Muddy here, run thr 124

The one benefit of the .270 that is undeniable is readily available brass, shoots well with variety of powders, use LR or LRM primers and as a high pressure cartridge can get excellent velocities. And I do believe one of the easiest cartridges to tune for accuracy.

Ok, off the soapbox😂
Looking forward to trying those 124s on my next order 👌
