.270 win recipe for hunting elk

My go to load is a 140 Accubond, in Win brass, Fed GM210M primer, 58.5 H4831SC at 3.39". My average velocity is 3005 from the 24" factory Winchester barrel. Very low ES and in my rifle delivers .5 - .8" groups at 200 yards. At 28 degrees this winter I was getting 2980 fps. I will have to work up a new load as I've only got 1/3 lb of that lot of powder remaining but with H4831SC I haven't experienced big lot differences.

I've shot 6 elk with the 270. My load consists of Norma brass, Federal Match 210 primers loaded with 150 gr. Nosler Partitions over 58.0 grains of REL-23. Out of my 24" tubed Remington 700, velocity is at, or just below 3000 fps. Accuracy runs in the .6 to .75 range. I have also shot 2 cows using a Barnes 130 gr. TTSX with nearly identical terminal performance. I hope this helps.

Anyone have a tried and true recipe for the .270 win that will be adequate for taking an elk?
The 270 will take any elk or moose with a Nosler 150 loaded with 55 to 57 go of 4831sc. I have been loading 270 since 1958,started with Speer 150,s and moved up to Nosler when the ballistic tip came out, note 57 gr. May be to hot for some guns. We have 5 m70,s in the family, they. All shoot and group well with 57gr loads. bullet placement...

Tons of good options for the 270 and elk, from the 110 TTSX to the 160 Noz and almost every bullet in between you just can't go wrong.

Be in excellent shape, be intimate with you rifle and have good bins and boots and you'll be fine. I've seen a ton load of elk taken with the 270, it's a great elk round.

Apple Pie and Ice Cream load for large animals with a 270 Win for decades has been 150 Partition and a full case of H4831. ( 56-58 grain range)

That said some of the newer powders might get you another 50-75 fps. Like R23, R26. The Elk won't know which one you re loading. Use whatever groups best.

the 160 partitians or the 150. you will be shoot a 700 to 850 LB animal and the 130 are too light. The 270 winchester is a very fine round but, the heaver bullet is a better choice. I am sure that John Nosler had that in the works for the 160 nosler and being a semi point is a good thing.

The 270 is a favorite around here for elk, shot a pile of bullets but the two we have settled on for quite some time are the 140 Berger and 165 Matrix over H1000.

Been using RL26 in .270 last 2 years and I've changed my thoughts on it for 150+ bullets as result. Here is Alliant load data for RL26 and I can say my own exceeds the velocity published with 24" barrel with the 150 ABLR which I think would be great elk load.

Go heavy for caliber....150 bonded or partition would be my suggestion. I'm sure the classic 130 load is fine as many have claimed....if you use a bonded or partition 130 I'm sure the elk wont know but why short your self on the game weight tables. ......... Just saying.

How many grains?

Not sure of your reloading experience @GJB89 but you just cant load up someone else's recipe, this is one reason why I do not give out load data, the other reason is they wont work in your rifle, they are all worked up in other peoples rifles at there set OAL's!!

Pick a powder that's recommended, pick a projectile that's recommended & start working up ;)
