270 Sherman Build completed!!!

WOW, that's looking promising to say the least! The 270 cal is really one of my favorites and the Sherman case and 165 Matrix is really doing it justice! Definitely following this :D Got some throating details, over all length?

I dont have the actual dimensions for the throat but I could probably get them from the smith. My max COAL with the 165 touching the lands is 3.570. The long throat/COAL is how I manage to get that much rl 33 in there. I'm running these loads at 3.553". The base to ogive reading (hornady comparator) is coming in at 2.892".
I love the 270 cal also... in fact so much that its looking like my near future is going to have a 270 SS in the works... purchased rifle to build with and 200 count of norma 300 saum brass today. Going to be my lightweight mountain rifle... that will be another thread this fall when completed

Figure it's time for an update.
Since my last post I've done alot of playing around with this rifle due the the extremely slow start to fire season. Since my last post I've installed a decelerator and bedded the recoil lug. I've also switched over to using 210 gm primers. Even though I have not shot the exact same load on same day it appears the 210 gm is running hotter than the cci200 I had been using which has gained around 30 fps(estimated from .2 grain charge difference). I am still using the hbn coating on the 165 matrix.
I made a quick trip out this morning with 4 rounds loaded at 2.905" bto, win brass, fed 210 gm, 69.9 grains of rl 33. I had one round that didn't chamber smooth like the rest and it ended up being 20 fps faster than the other 3 shots and was .75 moa left of other shots which went under .5 moa group. If I throw out the funky shot I had single digit es. The speeds were very impressive still at 3054,3060, and 3061 fps.
If I can keep this consistency it looks like I have found my load. When I get time next I'll stretch it out.

Don't have too much fun with you hear! :):D:rolleyes::cool:gun)

I got out and had a little more fun this weekend. Ran er' out to 992 yards with excellent results Saturday afternoon and was dead on with 3005 fps. I also got a call from a friend who lost a couple sheep recently and wanted some help with yote extermination to which I was obliged to help. The results were great!!! Got set up this morning and started calling... but not for long. Almost instantly a yote came into view. Got a range at 440, dialed up 4.75 moa and let it fly gun). The yote never even flinched. The bullet entered head on and ran most the length of the body and was devastating to the yote.

Sounds like you are having fun! Were you shooting the 165's?......Rich

Rich
It was the 165s. So far that is the only bullets I have shot through this rifle. I'm slowly working my way up on the game with the sherman. If only I could find a bear...

is there any way you could post a pic of one of your 270 sherman loaded rounds with the throating you have? Just curious as to how it looks compared to my 270 ai.
Also, beautiful pic of the yote:D

I'll see if I can get one loaded from my phone. The sherman is 4-5% more case capacity than the AI. Not a huge difference but with the throat on mine I have more use able. If the picture comes through the sherman is next to a 270 win with a 130 hornady sst.

I had Douglass chamber mine, it has very short freebore.
I wanted a 9 twist,they sent a 10.

I regret not letting Rich chamber a Sherman for me, sorry Rich.

Rich, have you attempted a 270 SS???

Not yet but Id. Trecker is building one soon I hear. It should reach 3100 with the 165's .......Rich

Haha maybe next time you'll come up with a beefier design Rich.

Tbrice... that is sad to hear they messed up that bad with the twist. Rich is correct about the 270 SS I have in the works. I'm just waiting on my barrel to come in from Brux. Should be by first week of july and I should be towards the front of my smith's line then and have it done by end of july. When I get it done I'll start a thread on it.
