I'm looking at rebarreling a Sako AIII in 270. Looking at 280 AI, any other cartridges to consider?

Want to stick with standard 0.473 bolt face, so no magnums. Don't like belted cartridges and prefer something with dies and brass available, ok with fire forming if needed. Probably do a 1:7 twist if 280 AI.

I can load, cycle and eject cartridges loaded as long as 3.59" with the factory mag (haven't tried longer). For the sake of loading long bullets, this would fit a 280 and the 195 Berger, although that might not be the optimal projectile. To be a candidate, the cartridge has to be able to properly seat some longer, high BC bullets.

Intended use is hunting game up to elk with long range performance in appropriate circumstances. The 270 just doesn't have the bullet selection.

.284 Norma Match. It's a .284 Winchester with a long throat for 175-180gr bullets. I have one and run RL23 with 175gr Elite Hunters and get 2840-2850 in a 26" barrel.

Why 1:7"? Unless you plan on running the heaviest mono ever invented, a 1:8" will spin the 195 EOL, 177 Hammer, or 170 Cayuga, etc.
Besides, unless you plan on shooting ELR, which the .280AI is not really suited for, you will actually get better results with a 175-184gr high BC bullet.

Oops, thanks: I meant 1:8! I'd like the fast twist in case I end up wanting to shoot solids.

Could do a 6.5 Sherman if you're ok with the brass prep. 140's over 3300 FPS wit a 28" barrel.
